Chapter 12: The Man Who Came for Ethan

I don’t remember the drive home.

I remember red lights.

Sarah screaming at me to slow down.

Ryan calling the police.

My father repeatedly trying to reach Karen.

No answer.

Then the security camera feed went offline.

“Call her again!”” I shouted.

“I am!””

Dad held the phone to his ear.

Nothing.

Sarah was crying.

“James, please.””

“I’m getting my son.””

Ryan leaned forward.

“Police are three minutes away.””

“Then they can meet us there.””

I turned onto our street.

Two patrol cars were already approaching from the opposite direction.

My front door was open.

I slammed the brakes.

Sarah grabbed me.

“Wait for the officers.””

Then I heard Ethan crying.

I ran.

“James!””

I crossed the lawn.

“Ethan!””

I entered the house.

The red bicycle lay on its side.

One wheel was still spinning.

My chest tightened.

“Ethan!””

“Daddy!””

His voice came from the kitchen.

I rushed in.

Ethan was standing beside Karen.

She looked frightened but unharmed.

And across the room stood the man from the photograph.

Nathan.

He raised both hands.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

I grabbed Ethan and pulled him behind me.

“Stay away from my son.””

Nathan’s eyes filled with something I didn’t expect.

Pain.

“I would never hurt him.””

Police entered behind me.

“Hands where we can see them!””

Nathan obeyed immediately.

Sarah ran to Ethan.

She dropped to her knees and wrapped her arms around him.

“You’re okay.””

Ethan cried into her shoulder.

“The man knew my name.””

I looked at Nathan.

“How?””

Nathan stared at me.

“Because I’ve been watching your family.””

I moved toward him.

An officer stopped me.

“You put cameras in my house?””

“No.””

“The hidden phone?””

“Not mine.””

“The messages?””

“Some were.””

My father entered.

Nathan saw him.

Everything changed.

His calm expression vanished.

“You.””

Dad stopped.

“Nathan.””

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“You still remember my name.””

“I never forgot it.””

“You let me think I had no family.””

Dad’s eyes filled.

“I tried to protect you.””

“Stop saying that.””

The force in Nathan’s voice made Ethan flinch.

Nathan immediately lowered his tone.

“I’m sorry.””

He looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“I didn’t come for him.””

“Then why are you here?””

“To stop Michael.””

I stared at him.

“Michael says the same thing about you.””

Nathan nodded.

“He would.””

Ryan entered with the hospital records.

Nathan recognized him immediately.

“Ryan Mitchell.””

Ryan froze.

“You know me?””

“I know who raised you.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“Then tell me who I am.””

Nathan looked at my father.

“Should I?””

Dad whispered, “Tell them.””

Nathan took a breath.

“Ryan, your mother was my aunt.””

Ryan’s face changed.

“What?””

“My biological mother’s sister.””

Nathan looked at me.

“And James’s mother was our cousin.””

The room became silent.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Nathan continued.

“The families spent generations hiding marriages, children, adoptions, and ownership agreements because every biological connection changed who controlled the trust.””

Sarah held Ethan tighter.

“This is insane.””

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why does Ethan matter?””

Nathan looked at my son.

“He shouldn’t.””

That answer surprised everyone.

“What?””

Nathan pointed toward the DNA report in Ryan’s hand.

“That test is fraudulent.””

I stared at him.

“You’re sure?””

“I ordered an independent test.””

He reached slowly into his jacket.

The officers immediately reacted.

“Stop!””

“It’s paper.””

One officer removed an envelope and handed it to me.

I opened it.

Another DNA report.

Ethan’s name.

My name.

The result confirmed I was Ethan’s biological father.

Nothing unusual.

No mysterious additional match.

No Mitchell connection.

Sarah started crying with relief.

I looked at Nathan.

“Then why create the fake report?””

“To make you believe Ethan controlled the trust.””

“Why?””

“So you would sign emergency guardianship and asset documents.””

Ryan suddenly understood.

“Documents that could transfer control if James became legally compromised.””

Nathan nodded.

“Exactly.””

I thought about Lena.

The forged signatures.

Michael moving company money.

“It was Michael.””

Nathan looked at me.

“Partly.””

“Who else?””

He glanced toward Sarah.

She stiffened.

I stepped in front of her.

“What are you looking at?””

Nathan said quietly:

“Sarah wasn’t having an affair.””

“I know.””

“But she was keeping something else from you.””

Sarah shook her head.

“Nathan, don’t.””

My blood turned cold.

“You know him?””

She started crying.

“James…”

“How do you know Nathan?””

Nathan answered for her.

“Because Sarah found me eight months ago.””

I stared at my wife.

Eight months.

Long before Ryan.

Long before the watch.

Long before my business trip.

“You knew my brother was alive?””

Sarah whispered, “Yes.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because he showed me something.””

“What?””

Nathan removed a small key from his pocket.

“A safe-deposit box.””

I looked at him.

“What’s inside?””

“The original trust documents.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“That could stop the transfer.””

Nathan shook his head.

“That’s not the important part.””

My father suddenly looked terrified.

“Nathan.””

Nathan ignored him.

“There’s also a letter.””

“From who?””

Nathan looked directly at me.

“Your mother.””

I stopped breathing.

“She died when I was twelve.””

“I know.””

“What does the letter say?””

Nathan’s expression softened.

“She wrote it because she knew one day you’d discover the truth about your family.””

Dad whispered:

“Don’t.””

I turned toward him.

“Why?””

He looked broken.

Nathan held out the key.

“Because the letter doesn’t explain who stole you from the hospital, James.””

May you like

He placed the key in my palm.

“It explains why your mother helped them do it.””
