Chapter 9: The Woman Who Tried to Warn Me
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The picture on Richard’s phone burned into my mind.
Laura.
The woman who tried to help me.
The woman who knew Richard’s secrets.
The woman who had warned me not to go alone.
“She’s alive,” Richard said.
His voice was calm again.
Too calm.
“Where is she?””
I stepped toward him.
Richard smiled faintly.
“There’s the Emily I know.””
My face tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you care.””
I hated how easily he turned emotions into weapons.
Marcus looked at him.
“You know where she is.””
Richard glanced at Marcus.
“You’re very protective.””
“And you’re avoiding the question.””
Richard looked back at me.
“Come with me.””
“No.””
His smile disappeared.
“Emily.””
“No.””
I said it louder.
“You don’t get to threaten me and then pretend you’re helping.””
For a second, something dangerous moved across his face.
Then it vanished.
“You really think these people will save you?””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Careful.””
Richard laughed.
“You still don’t understand.””
He pointed at me.
“She doesn’t know.””
“Know what?”” I asked.
Richard looked at me.
“The reason Laura disappeared.””
My heart pounded.
“You did something to her.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“She did something to herself.””
I felt disgust.
“You’re lying.””
Richard sighed.
“You always assume the worst.””
Marcus looked at the phone.
“Show us the location.””
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation said more than words.
“You don’t want us to find her.””
Richard’s eyes moved to Marcus.
“You’re smarter than you look.””
The room went silent.
I felt a strange calm settle over me.
Because I finally understood.
Richard wasn’t afraid of losing.
He was afraid of being exposed.
“What did Laura find?”” I asked.
Richard didn’t answer.
“What did she know?””
Still nothing.
I stepped closer.
“Was it about the money?””
His expression changed.
A tiny movement.
But I saw it.
“The custody papers?””
Another reaction.
“The cameras?””
Richard looked away.
And that was when I knew.
All those things were connected.
He wasn’t just controlling my life.
He was protecting something.
Marcus took out his phone.
“I’m sending the files to several people.””
Richard’s head snapped up.
“What?””
“The recordings. The documents. Everything.””
Richard’s face went pale.
“You don’t have copies.””
Marcus smiled slightly.
“You’d be surprised.””
Richard moved toward him.
“Delete them.””
“No.””
“Do you know what you’re doing?””
Marcus stared at him.
“Exactly.””
Richard looked at me.
“Emily.””
I didn’t respond.
“Do you really want to destroy your family?””
The words would have worked before.
They wouldn’t now.
“My family isn’t the thing you’re protecting.””
His eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“You are.””
Silence.
The truth sat between us.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
Richard looked away first.
Then his phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at it.
He read the message.
And for the first time, he looked completely broken.
“What?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
Marcus reached for the phone.
Richard pulled it away.
“No.””
Marcus stared.
“What did you get?””
Richard’s hand shook.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
The man who always controlled everything was losing control.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Richard listened.
His face changed.
Then he whispered:
“You weren’t supposed to wake up.””
My stomach dropped.
Marcus immediately stepped closer.
“Who is that?””
Richard ended the call.
Too late.
Because we all heard the voice through the speaker.
A woman.
Weak.
Terrified.
Alive.
Laura.
And her first words were:
“Emily… Richard wasn’t trying to take your daughter.””
I froze.
Laura continued, her voice shaking.
“He was trying to take something from you that’s been yours since before you met him.””
I looked at Richard.
He looked away.

Laura whispered one final sentence:
“The man you married chose you because of what your grandmother left behind.””
