Chapter 5: The Evidence Hidden in Plain Sight
The line went dead.
I stared at my phone.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just silence.
Marcus immediately reached for his phone.
“Call her back.””
I did.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Nothing.
“She knew,” I whispered.
Marcus looked toward the window.
“Yeah.””
My stomach twisted.
“How could he know?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
I already knew.
Richard had always been better at watching than talking.
He noticed everything.
When I changed my password.
When I stayed late at work.
When I started spending more time with my sister.
He called it attention.
I called it control.
But I never realized how far it went.
The café door opened.
Everyone looked up.
A man walked in.
Not Richard.
Someone else.
He wore jeans and a baseball cap pulled low.
He scanned the room.
Then his eyes landed on me.
Marcus immediately stood.
“Can I help you?””
The man looked at Marcus.
Then me.
“I’m looking for Emily Carter.””
My heart stopped.
“I’m Emily.””
The man reached into his pocket.
Marcus moved forward.
“Slowly.””
The man lifted both hands.
“Relax. I’m not here to hurt anyone.””
He pulled out an envelope.
“Laura told me to give this to her if she couldn’t.””
I stared at the envelope.
“Who are you?””
“David.””
“David what?””
He hesitated.
“David Bennett.””
My breath caught.
“Laura’s husband?””
He nodded.
The room seemed to shift.
“Where is Laura?””
His expression changed.
“She disappeared.””
My chest tightened.
“When?””
“Last night.””
Marcus took the envelope.
“Why didn’t you go to the police?””
David laughed bitterly.
“You think I didn’t try?””
He looked at me.
“The police said there wasn’t enough evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
David looked around the café.
Then lowered his voice.
“Richard has been covering things up for years.””
I felt a chill.
“What things?””
David looked at the envelope.
“She kept copies.””
“Copies of what?””
“Everything.””
Marcus opened the envelope carefully.
Inside were several photographs.
Documents.
A flash drive.
My hands shook as I picked up the first photo.
It was Richard.
Standing outside a courthouse.
Beside him was a woman I didn’t recognize.
The date was five years ago.
Marcus picked up another document.
His eyes narrowed.
“What is this?””
I looked over.
A company name appeared.
*Carter Family Holdings.*
My name was written underneath.
“What does that mean?””
David looked at me.
“You don’t know?””
I shook my head.
“Know what?””
He looked genuinely shocked.
“Richard never told you?””
“Told me what?””
David took a breath.
“Before you married Richard, you inherited money from your grandmother.””
My heart pounded.
“Yes.””
“I thought so.””
“I never had access to it. Richard handled everything.””
The silence afterward was immediate.
Marcus slowly looked at me.
“Emily.””
I felt sick.
“What?””
“Did you sign documents after you got married?””
I nodded.
“A few.””
“How many?””
“I don’t know.””
David closed his eyes.
“That’s what he did.””
My voice became quiet.
“What did he do?””
“He made you sign control over your assets.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
David looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I stood suddenly.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Richard had always said paperwork was normal.
He said he was helping.
He said couples shared everything.
Marcus picked up another document.
“This isn’t just about money.””
I looked at him.
“What else?””
He turned the page.
A name was written at the top.
*Emergency Custody Transfer Agreement.*
My blood froze.
“Richard prepared this too?””
David nodded.
“He has been building a case against you for years.””
The room started spinning.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Then Marcus looked at the flash drive.
“There may be something on here.””
He picked it up.
The small device suddenly felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.
“Do you have a computer?””
David nodded.
“My truck.””
We walked outside.
Richard’s SUV was still there.
But the moment he saw the flash drive in Marcus’s hand, his expression changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
Real fear.
Marcus noticed.
And so did I.
Richard rolled down his window.
“Where did you get that?””
I stared at him.
For once, he didn’t pretend.
He was afraid.
Marcus held up the flash drive.
“Why?””
Richard’s face went pale.
Then he said the one sentence that made me realize this was bigger than our marriage.
“Because if Emily sees what’s on that drive…”
He stopped.
But it was already too late.
Because I heard the fear in his voice.
May you like
And I knew.
Whatever was on that flash drive was something Richard had spent years making sure I never found.
