Chapter 6: The Recording Richard Never Wanted Found
David’s truck smelled like old coffee and motor oil.
I sat in the passenger seat while Marcus connected the flash drive to his laptop.
Nobody spoke.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because there was too much.
My entire marriage felt like a story someone else had written.
And I had been the only person who didn’t know the ending.
The files loaded.
One folder appeared.
No name.
Just a date.
*03-14-2022*
Marcus clicked it.
Inside were audio files.
Photos.
Scanned documents.
My heart raced.
“Open the audio.””
Marcus pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then a voice.
Richard.
I knew it instantly.
“Once she signs everything, the rest will be easy.””
My body went cold.
Marcus looked at me.
I couldn’t move.
Another voice answered.
A woman.
“Are you sure she won’t notice?””
Richard laughed.
“She trusts me.””
The truck suddenly felt too small.
I covered my mouth.
The recording continued.
“She’s emotional,” Richard said.
“That’s why this works.””
The woman laughed.
“And the child?””
My eyes widened.
Sophie.
Richard’s voice lowered.
“Once Emily loses credibility, custody won’t be difficult.””
I felt like the air had disappeared.
Marcus immediately stopped the recording.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No. Play it.””
“Emily—”
“Play it.””
He looked at me.
Then pressed the button.
Richard’s voice filled the truck again.
“She’ll never think I planned this.””
The woman asked, “And if she leaves?””
Richard answered calmly.
“Then we make sure everyone believes she destroyed the family.””
I closed my eyes.
The worst part wasn’t hearing him say it.
The worst part was realizing how long he had been preparing.
Marcus shut the laptop.
“We have enough.””
“No.””
I opened my eyes.
“We need more.””
David looked at me.
“What do you mean?””
I stared at the screen.
“Richard always has a backup plan.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“He probably does.””
I looked toward the café.
Richard was still standing outside.
But now I saw him differently.
Not as my husband.
Not as the man I once loved.
As someone who had been planning my downfall while sleeping beside me.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Richard.
*Come home. We need to talk. Alone.*
I showed Marcus.
He shook his head immediately.
“No.””
“I need to know what he knows.””
“You don’t need to put yourself in danger.””
I looked at him.
“Marcus, he already took my daughter.””
The words silenced everyone.
Because that was the truth.
Richard wasn’t trying to hurt me.
Not directly.
He was trying to break me.
I typed a response.
*Where?*
His reply came instantly.
*Our house. One hour.*
Marcus frowned.
“He answered too fast.””
“He wanted me to go there.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the recording.
“He wants something.””
David nodded.
“Probably the flash drive.””
Marcus closed the laptop.
“Then we don’t go.””
I looked at him.
“We?””
He looked surprised.
Then smiled slightly.
“You thought I was letting you walk into that house alone?””
A strange emotion moved through me.
Trust.
Something I hadn’t felt in years.
My phone buzzed again.
This time it was a photo.
My hands shook as I opened it.
It was Sophie.
Sitting on the couch at home.
Crying.
The caption underneath was from Richard.
*She misses you. Don’t make her suffer because of your choices.*
I stared at the screen.
Marcus saw my face.
“What happened?””
I showed him.
His expression hardened.
“He’s using her.””
I nodded.
Then I noticed something in the background of the photo.
A small object on the table behind Sophie.
A framed picture.
I zoomed in.
My breath stopped.
Because I recognized the frame.
It wasn’t from our house.
It was from Richard’s office.
The same office where I found the custody papers.
And behind the frame, barely visible, was something else.
A small black camera.
I whispered one word.
“Marcus…”
He leaned closer.
“What?””
I looked at the image.
“Richard wasn’t just watching me.””
I swallowed.
“He was recording me.””
Marcus stared at the photo.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s terrified voice came through.
Laura.
She whispered only four words.
“Emily is being recorded.””
Marcus went silent.
May you like
Then Laura added:
“Because Richard needs proof for the day he plans to make her disappear.””
