Chapter 12: The Person Behind the Betrayal
I left the hospital feeling like I was walking through someone else’s nightmare.
My sister was missing.
My husband had built a plan against me.
My grandmother had predicted it years ago.
And somewhere in the middle of everything was a person I trusted.
A person who helped Richard.
The drive back was silent.
Sophie slept in the back seat.
Marcus drove.
I stared out the window.
“Do you think Rachel is okay?””
Marcus kept his eyes on the road.
“Yes.””
“You don’t know that.””
“No.””
He paused.
“But I know she’s smart.””
I looked down.
“She tried to warn me.””
“Yes.””
“And I ignored her.””
Marcus glanced at me.
“Emily.””
“I thought she was trying to ruin my marriage.””
“You were manipulated.””
“I should have seen it.””
He shook his head.
“People who manipulate others depend on trust.””
I didn’t answer.
Because part of me still blamed myself.
When we arrived at my sister’s house, the front door was unlocked.
My heart immediately raced.
“Rachel?””
No answer.
Marcus motioned for me to stay back.
He entered first.
The house was dark.
Too quiet.
Then he called out.
“Rachel?””
Nothing.
I followed.
The living room was destroyed.
Drawers open.
Papers everywhere.
Someone had searched the place.
But they weren’t looking for valuables.
They were looking for information.
Marcus picked up a broken picture frame.
“What is this?””
I looked.
It was a photo of Rachel and me as children.
Behind the picture was something hidden.
A small envelope.
My name was written on it.
My hands shook.
“She left this for me.””
I opened it.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a note.
*Emily, if you found this, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. I was afraid Richard would come after you. I was wrong. He already had.*
My eyes blurred.
I continued reading.
*The person helping Richard is someone you would never suspect. Someone who has been protecting his secret because they believe they deserve part of what your grandmother left behind.*
Marcus looked at me.
“What else?””
I turned the page.
There was one final line.
*Don’t trust the person who tells you they are trying to save you.*
A noise came from upstairs.
We froze.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone was in the house.
Marcus immediately moved in front of me.
“Stay behind me.””
The footsteps stopped.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
A voice I knew.
A voice that made my heart drop.
“Emily.””
The person stepped into the hallway.
I couldn’t speak.
Because the person standing there…
May you like
Was the last person I expected to see.
And they were holding Rachel’s phone.
