Chapter 7: The House Full of Cameras

I used to think the scariest place in the world was somewhere unfamiliar.

A dark street.

An empty parking lot.

A stranger’s car.

I was wrong.

The scariest place was the house where I had tucked my daughter into bed every night.

Because now I knew the walls had been watching me.

Marcus drove behind me as I headed back toward my old neighborhood.

Not close enough for Richard to notice.

Not far enough for me to feel alone.

Every turn brought back a memory.

The tree Sophie planted in the front yard.

The kitchen where Richard used to make pancakes on Sundays.

The living room where he told me I was “too sensitive” whenever I cried.

I had spent years trying to make that house feel like a home.

Now I wondered if it had ever been one.

When I pulled into the driveway, Richard was already waiting.

He stood by the front door.

Perfect suit.

Perfect smile.

Perfect lie.

He looked at my car.

Then behind me.

His eyes narrowed when he saw Marcus’s truck.

“You brought him?””

I stepped out.

“I’m not alone anymore.””

Richard laughed softly.

“Is that what he told you?””

I ignored him.

“Where is Sophie?””

“Inside.””

“Let me see her.””

Richard didn’t move.

“You’re not going to ask me how I’m doing?””

I stared at him.

“No.””

Something flashed across his face.

For years, that question would have hurt him.

For years, I would have apologized.

Not anymore.

Richard opened the door.

“Sophie is upstairs.””

I walked past him.

Then stopped.

Because the moment I entered the house, I saw it.

The tiny black camera in the corner of the hallway.

Exactly like the one in the photo.

I looked at Richard.

He noticed.

And smiled.

“You’re finally paying attention.””

My stomach turned.

“How many?””

“How many what?””

“Cameras.””

He shrugged.

“Don’t be dramatic.””

That answer told me everything.

I walked into the living room.

Another camera.

The bookshelf.

Another.

The kitchen.

Another.

My hands started shaking.

“You recorded me?””

Richard followed slowly.

“I protected my family.””

“You spied on me.””

“I documented behavior.””

“Whose behavior?””

His smile faded.

“Yours.””

I laughed.

A small, broken sound.

“Of course.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You don’t understand how difficult you’ve been.””

I looked at him.

“No. I understand now.””

His eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“You weren’t trying to save our marriage.””

Silence.

“You were building a case against me.””

For the first time, Richard didn’t answer.

That was confirmation enough.

A noise came from upstairs.

“Mommy?””

My heart broke.

“Sophie!””

I ran.

Richard grabbed my arm.

Not hard.

Just enough.

Enough to remind me.

The old Richard.

The one who believed a small touch could still control me.

I pulled away.

“Don’t.””

His face changed.

“You really think this biker is going to protect you forever?””

I stared at him.

“No.””

I walked toward the stairs.

“I think I can protect myself now.””

Sophie ran down before I reached the top.

She crashed into me.

I dropped to my knees and held her.

She smelled like shampoo and crayons.

My daughter.

My entire world.

“Mommy, I was scared.””

“I know, baby.””

“Daddy said you left because you didn’t love us.””

I looked over Sophie’s shoulder.

Richard stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Watching.

Waiting for my reaction.

I kissed her hair.

“Daddy was wrong.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You’re going to do this in front of her?””

I stood.

“Yes.””

“Emily.””

“No more secrets.””

The silence that followed felt different.

Not scary.

Freeing.

Then Marcus entered the doorway.

Richard looked at him.

“I didn’t invite you.””

Marcus looked around the house.

At the cameras.

At the man who installed them.

“No.””

He paused.

“But someone needed to see this.””

Richard smiled.

“You think anyone will believe you?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he pulled out his phone.

“I think they will.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What did you do?””

Marcus showed him the screen.

A recording was playing.

Richard’s own voice.

The conversation from earlier.

The one where he admitted he had prepared for Emily leaving.

Richard went completely still.

“You recorded me?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the cameras around the house.

“You did.””

Richard’s confidence cracked.

Just slightly.

But enough.

I saw it.

He wasn’t afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing control of the story.

Then Sophie tugged my hand.

“Mommy?””

I looked down.

She was holding something.

A small pink notebook.

“Daddy told me not to touch this.””

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

She pointed upstairs.

“His office.””

Richard moved instantly.

“Give that to me.””

The speed of his reaction told me everything.

Marcus stepped between us.

“No.””

Richard stared at the notebook.

Then at me.

“Emily, don’t.””

I opened it.

The first page was covered with handwriting.

Dates.

Names.

Notes.

My name appeared over and over.

But the last page made my blood freeze.

Because it wasn’t about me.

It was about Sophie.
