Chapter 13: The Betrayal Behind the Door

I knew that voice before I saw the face.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I had heard it my entire life.

The person stepped into the hallway slowly, holding Rachel’s phone in one hand.

My body went completely still.

“Mom?””

The word barely came out.

My mother looked at me.

And for a moment, she looked exactly like the woman who packed my lunches, held me when I cried, and sat beside my grandmother’s hospital bed.

Then I remembered the note.

*Don’t trust the person who tells you they are trying to save you.*

Marcus immediately moved closer.

“Emily, stay back.””

My mother looked at him.

“You brought a stranger into this?””

I stared at her.

“Where is Rachel?””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You know?””

My heart sank.

“You know where she is.””

My mother looked away.

That was the first time in my entire life she had looked guilty.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want this to happen.””

“What does that mean?””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“I thought I could control it.””

The room felt colder.

“Control what?””

She looked at the destroyed house.

“Everything.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You helped Richard.””

My mother looked at him.

“I made a mistake.””

I laughed.

A painful, empty sound.

“A mistake?””

I pointed around.

“My sister is missing.””

She flinched.

“I didn’t know he would go this far.””

“You knew enough.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

And for one second, I saw my mother again.

The person I loved.

The person I trusted.

Then she spoke.

And that person disappeared.

“Your grandmother should have chosen me.””

The words hit harder than any confession.

I stared at her.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“She built everything around you.””

My voice shook.

“She was my grandmother.””

“And I was her daughter.””

The anger in her voice surprised me.

“I spent my whole life watching her protect you.””

“That’s what this is about?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“It’s about fairness.””

Marcus looked disgusted.

“You helped a man destroy your daughter because you felt overlooked?””

My mother’s eyes flashed.

“Don’t pretend you understand.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“I understand perfectly.””

She ignored him.

“Your grandmother knew Richard would come after the inheritance.””

I froze.

“How?””

“Because she knew people.””

My mother walked closer.

“She knew your father. She knew me. She knew everyone wanted something.””

“Then why choose me?””

Her face softened.

“Because she loved you.””

I didn’t expect that answer.

And maybe that was why it hurt more.

My mother looked down.

“She created the trust to protect you.””

“Then why did you help Richard?””

Her silence answered before her words did.

“Because he promised me something.””

My stomach turned.

“What?””

“A share.””

I stared.

“He promised you my inheritance?””

She looked away.

“I thought I could take back what was mine.””

“You thought stealing from your daughter was taking back something?””

She began crying.

“I was angry.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You were jealous.””

She didn’t deny it.

Marcus’s phone buzzed.

He checked it.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He turned the screen toward me.

A message.

From Rachel’s phone.

*I know who helped Richard. I know where the original documents are. Come alone if you want your sister alive.*

My mother saw the message.

And went pale.

“Where did you get that?””

I looked at her.

“You’re afraid.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

But she was.

Marcus noticed too.

“Who sent it?””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother whispered:

“He doesn’t know.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Richard.””

The room went silent.

“What are you talking about?””

My mother grabbed her coat.

“You need to leave.””

Marcus blocked the door.

“Explain.””

She looked at me.

“Richard thinks he’s the person controlling everything.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“He isn’t.””

I felt a chill.

“Then who is?””

My mother looked toward Rachel’s phone.

Then at me.

“The person who started this plan.””

She swallowed.

“Is someone who has been close to you since before Richard.””

My fingers tightened.

“Who?””

She whispered a name.

A name that made Marcus immediately reach for his phone.

Because he knew exactly who it was.

And when he looked at me, I knew.

Everything we thought we understood was wrong.
