Chapter 10: The Inheritance He Tried to Steal

Laura’s voice disappeared.

The call ended.

But her words stayed.

*The man you married chose you because of what your grandmother left behind.*

I stood in the middle of my living room, surrounded by cameras, documents, and the remains of a life I thought I understood.

Everything I believed about Richard had shifted.

The first time he held my hand.

The first time he told me I was different.

The first time he said he didn’t care about my family’s money.

Were those moments real?

Or had I been a target from the beginning?

I looked at Richard.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

He didn’t answer.

That was all I needed.

My chest tightened.

“Richard.””

He finally looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I understand perfectly.””

He took a step forward.

“You think this is about money.””

“Isn’t it?””

“It’s bigger than that.””

Marcus stepped between us.

“Explain.””

Richard looked at him with disgust.

“You really think you’re part of this?””

Marcus didn’t move.

“I think Emily deserves the truth.””

Richard laughed.

“The truth?””

He looked around the house.

“At what point did she tell you she was never supposed to inherit anything?””

I frowned.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“Ask her.””

Everyone looked at me.

My stomach twisted.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard smiled.

“Your grandmother didn’t leave you money.””

I felt confused.

“She did.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“She left you ownership.””

The room went quiet.

I remembered the lawyer.

The documents after my grandmother died.

The way Richard offered to “help me understand” everything.

I had been grieving.

Overwhelmed.

Trusting.

“What ownership?””

Richard looked almost satisfied.

Finally.

The moment he had been waiting for.

“Your grandmother owned a controlling share in a company.””

David stepped forward.

“Carter Family Holdings.””

Richard nodded.

“Exactly.””

My hands went cold.

“But I never managed anything.””

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“Because you didn’t know how.””

The cruelty in his voice made me sick.

Marcus noticed.

“Keep talking.””

Richard ignored him.

“Your grandmother knew you weren’t interested in business. She knew you wanted a normal life.””

“So?””

“So she created a condition.””

My heart pounded.

“What condition?””

Richard’s expression changed.

“She wanted you protected.””

A chill ran through me.

“Protected from what?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“People like him.””

Richard glared.

“My grandmother knew people would try to manipulate me?””

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The marriage.

The documents.

The cameras.

The custody plan.

Richard wasn’t just trying to control me.

He was trying to control my inheritance.

“What condition?”” I asked again.

Richard looked at me.

“You had to maintain ownership until your daughter turned eighteen.””

My breath stopped.

“Sophie?””

“Yes.””

I looked at my daughter upstairs.

“She was the reason.””

Richard nodded.

“Your grandmother wanted Sophie protected too.””

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“And Richard wanted access.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You make everything sound evil.””

“You built a fake marriage.””

Richard ignored him.

“You think I didn’t sacrifice?””

I stared at him.

“You sacrificed?””

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“I built a company. I protected assets. I kept everything together.””

“You stole my life.””

His face hardened.

“I gave you a life.””

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Then stronger.

“You gave me a cage.””

For the first time, Richard looked hurt.

But I knew him.

I knew the difference between pain and performance.

This was frustration.

He wasn’t sorry.

He was angry I had figured it out.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A message.

From Laura.

*I know where the original trust documents are. Richard doesn’t. Meet me at the hospital. Hurry.*

Marcus read it.

“Hospital?””

I nodded.

“She woke up.””

David grabbed his jacket.

“Then we go now.””

Richard moved toward the door.

“No.””

Marcus blocked him.

“You’re not coming.””

Richard laughed.

“You don’t understand.””

He looked at me.

“Those documents will destroy you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“There’s a reason your grandmother hid them.””

My heart raced.

“What reason?””

He stepped closer.

“Because your family wasn’t as innocent as you think.””

Silence.

Marcus watched him carefully.

“You’re lying.””

Richard looked at me.

“Am I?””

I wanted to believe Marcus.

I wanted to believe everything Richard said was another manipulation.

But one thing stopped me.

The fear in his eyes.

Not fake fear.

Real fear.

May you like

Because whatever was in those original documents…

Richard was afraid of me finding it.
