Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed

I read the sentence again.

And again.

But the words refused to change.

*I was there when Elijah vanished.*

My hands shook so badly I dropped the paper.

Marcus was in the living room when I walked back inside.

He looked at my face.

He knew.

“What did you find?””

I held up the note.

“Tell me.””

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked older.

Not the man I married.

Not the father who held my hand at Elijah’s funeral.

Just a broken man carrying something too heavy for too long.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I should have told you everything.””

“Yes.””

“But I was afraid.””

I stepped closer.

“Afraid of what?””

He looked at me.

“Losing my family.””

I shook my head.

“You already did.””

The words hurt him.

They hurt me too.

Marcus sat down.

“When Elijah disappeared, I was at the lake house.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because Daniel Brooks asked me to meet him there.””

The same man.

The same name that appeared everywhere.

“What did Daniel want?””

“He wanted revenge.””

“Against you?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“He believed I ruined his life.””

I crossed my arms.

“And Elijah?””

“He was never supposed to be there.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus’s voice broke.

“Your mother brought him.””

I stared.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Marcus looked up.

“She told me she wanted to talk to me privately. She said she knew about Daniel’s threats.””

“And you went?””

“Yes.””

I felt anger rising.

“You went alone?””

“Yes.””

“And Elijah?””

“He followed her.””

A memory flashed.

Elijah at six years old.

Always curious.

Always wanting to know what adults were doing.

Marcus continued.

“When I arrived, Daniel was already there.””

“What happened?””

“An argument.””

“About what?””

“Money. Secrets. Your father.””

My stomach tightened.

“My father?””

Marcus nodded.

“Daniel knew Thomas Carter.””

Of course he did.

Everyone was connected.

Everyone except me.

“Then what?””

Marcus looked away.

“Daniel grabbed Elijah.””

I stopped breathing.

“He tried to take him.””

“What did you do?””

“I fought him.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus’s eyes filled.

“Because when I grabbed Elijah, he fell.””

The room went quiet.

My heart shattered.

“What?””

“He hit his head.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“I thought he was dead.””

Tears fell from his eyes.

“I thought I had lost him.””

My anger mixed with confusion.

“Then how was he alive?””

“Your mother found him.””

Marcus looked at me.

“She took him.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel ran.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Marcus stood.

“Your mother believed Daniel would come back. She believed he would hurt Elijah if anyone knew he survived.””

“So she hid him.””

“Yes.””

“And you let her.””

He looked broken.

“Yes.””

I cried.

Not because I finally understood.

Because I realized how many people had decided my life without me.

My mother.

My husband.

Everyone.

Marcus stepped closer.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He had no answer.

Exactly.

“When Elijah turned eighteen?””

“When Noah graduated?””

“When you were too old to fight back?””

“Claire…”

“No.””

I wiped my tears.

“You don’t get to be the victim.””

He nodded slowly.

“I know.””

For the first time, he didn’t defend himself.

The next morning, Detective Collins arrived with new information.

“We found Daniel Brooks.””

Everyone froze.

“Where?””

She looked at me.

“Outside the city.””

“Is he alive?””

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then we can finally get answers.””

Detective Collins hesitated.

“What?””

“He asked to speak with Claire.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

She handed me a sealed envelope.

“He said before he talks, you need to read this.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A picture of Thomas Carter.

Standing beside Daniel.

Standing beside my mother.

And standing beside another person.

A person I recognized.

Because I had seen that face every day for twenty years.

The note attached had one sentence.

*Claire, the man who raised you was never your father.*

I looked up.

May you like

Detective Collins whispered:

“Your entire family history is a lie.””
