Chapter 6: The Brother From The Past

“Elijah?””

My son stared at the paper.

His face had gone pale.

“You know that name?””

Detective Collins asked gently.

Elijah didn’t answer.

He looked at me.

Then at Marcus.

Then back at the document.

“I heard Grandma say it.””

My heart tightened.

“What name?””

His lips trembled.

“Lucas.””

The room froze.

I felt Marcus’s hand close around mine.

“Who is Lucas?””

Elijah looked down.

“Grandma told me not to talk about him.””

Every part of me went cold.

My mother had taken my son.

But she had also hidden another child.

“Where did you hear about him?”” Detective Collins asked.

Elijah swallowed.

“In the basement.””

The lake house.

My stomach turned.

“She had pictures.””

“What kind of pictures?””

Elijah looked terrified.

“Pictures of boys.””

Detective Collins immediately stood.

“We need to go back.””

The drive to the lake house felt endless.

No one spoke.

I sat beside Elijah in the back seat.

I wanted to ask him a thousand questions.

Did he remember me?

Did he miss me?

Was he happy?

Was he afraid?

But I knew better.

He had spent seven years being told what to think.

I wouldn’t force answers from him.

When we arrived, police searched the basement.

Behind an old wooden shelf, they found a hidden compartment.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

My mother’s entire secret life.

Detective Collins opened the first file.

“This is about Thomas Carter.””

The next file.

“Daniel Brooks.””

Then another.

She stopped.

“This one is different.””

She handed it to me.

The folder contained adoption records.

A child.

Born eighteen years ago.

Mother listed:

Claire Carter.

I stared.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“What?””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Detective Collins looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because I only have one child.””

She looked at the document again.

Then at me.

“Claire, according to this record…”

Her voice softened.

“You had another baby.””

The room spun.

I grabbed the table.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me with shock.

“Claire…”

“I would know if I had another child.””

But deep down…

A memory surfaced.

A hospital room.

A baby crying.

My mother holding my hand.

The doctor looking uncomfortable.

Then darkness.

I had always believed it was a dream.

A trauma memory from a difficult time in my life.

But now I wasn’t sure.

Detective Collins continued.

“The records say the baby was taken immediately after birth.””

“Taken by who?””

She turned the page.

The answer was written there.

A name.

Evelyn Carter.

My mother.

I felt sick.

My mother didn’t just steal seven years from me.

She had been stealing pieces of my life since before I could remember.

Elijah stepped closer.

“Mom…”

I looked at him.

“Grandma told me something once.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She said she saved us from him.””

“From who?””

Elijah looked at the photograph of Thomas Carter.

Then he whispered:

“From our father.””

A cold silence filled the basement.

Because for the first time, I realized something.

My mother may have lied.

She may have manipulated.

She may have destroyed my family.

But maybe she wasn’t hiding the truth to hurt me.

Maybe she was hiding it because the truth was worse.

Detective Collins opened one final envelope.

Inside was a letter from my mother.

The last thing she ever wrote.

I unfolded it with shaking hands.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

*Claire, I know you will hate me when you learn what I did. But before you judge me, find your missing daughter.*

I looked up.

Everyone stared at me.

“My missing daughter?””

Detective Collins slowly turned the envelope over.

A small photograph fell out.

A teenage girl.

Standing beside Thomas Carter.

Standing beside Lucas.

And wearing a necklace I recognized.

The necklace my mother gave me on my eighteenth birthday.

The necklace she claimed she lost.

The necklace that belonged to my daughter.

**“Her name is Lily,” the letter continued.

“And she has been looking for you for years.””**
