Chapter 11: The Last Secret Evelyn Kept
Thomas Carter was found in a small town three hours away.
He didn’t run.
He didn’t deny his identity.
He simply sat in a quiet house and waited.
Like he knew this day would come.
When I entered the room, I expected anger.
I expected a monster.
Instead, I saw an old man.
A tired man.
But tired people could still destroy lives.
Thomas looked at me.
“You look like your mother.””
I hated that sentence.
I hated that after everything, he could still make me feel like a child.
“I don’t know you.””
He smiled sadly.
“That’s because Evelyn made sure you didn’t.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Everyone keeps saying her name like she was protecting me.””
Thomas looked away.
“She thought she was.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She truly believed every decision she made was for your benefit.””
That almost made me laugh.
“She stole my children.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“She destroyed my life.””
“Yes.””
“She lied to me for decades.””
“Yes.””
His agreement surprised me.
“Then why defend her?””
“I’m not.””
He looked at me.
“I’m explaining her.””
Detective Collins sat beside me.
“Thomas, we need answers.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Then he looked at me.
“Your mother discovered something about me twenty-five years ago.””
“What?””
“That I wasn’t your father.””
I already knew.
“But she also discovered something else.””
He paused.
“She discovered I had another family.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked down.
“I had a son.””
The room went quiet.
“Lucas?””
He nodded.
My breath caught.
The name from my mother’s files.
The name Elijah recognized.
“Who is Lucas?””
Thomas’s expression changed.
Pain.
Regret.
“Your half-brother.””
I stared.
“How?””
“Your mother and I were together for years.””
“But Daniel said—”
“Daniel was your biological father.””
Thomas nodded.
“But I raised you.””
I felt sick.
My entire childhood was a puzzle with missing pieces.
“My mother knew about Lucas?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide him?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because Lucas was dangerous.””
I frowned.
“A child?””
“No.””
His voice became serious.
“An adult.””
The room changed.
“Lucas was involved with people who wanted money and power. When he discovered Evelyn had hidden you and your children, he wanted to use that information.””
“To do what?””
Thomas looked at me.
“To control everyone.””
I thought about all the names.
Daniel.
My mother.
Marcus.
Lucas.
A web of secrets.
“Where is he now?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Where is Lucas?””
Finally, he whispered:
“Closer than you think.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One picture.
My house.
Taken that morning.
My heart stopped.
Another message appeared.
*You finally found the truth.*
Then another.
*Now find out why Evelyn really kept Elijah.*
I showed Detective Collins.
Her expression changed.
“Claire, when did you receive this?””
“Just now.””
She immediately stood.
“Everyone needs to leave.””
But before we could move, another message arrived.
This time it contained a video.
I pressed play.
The screen showed my mother.
Alive.
Sitting in the lake house.
My breath caught.
Impossible.
The video was old.
Recorded before she died.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“Claire,” she said.
My heart broke hearing her voice.
“I know you hate me.””
She paused.
“But someday you will understand.””
The video continued.
“I didn’t take Elijah because I wanted him.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I took him because someone was coming for him.””
She looked terrified.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
*“Lucas found out Elijah survived.””*
The video ended.
Everyone was silent.
Detective Collins looked at me.
“Claire…”
I couldn’t speak.
Because the final secret wasn’t about what my mother did.

It was about what she was afraid would happen.
And Lucas was still out there.
