Chapter 10: The Father I Was Never Given

The photograph stayed in my hands for a full minute.

Maybe longer.

I couldn’t look away from it.

My mother.

Daniel Brooks.

Thomas Carter.

And another man standing beside them.

A man whose face I had spent my entire childhood trying to remember.

Because he was the man in my family photos.

The man my mother called my father.

But Daniel’s note said he wasn’t.

*The man who raised you was never your father.*

My entire life had been built on a lie.

I looked at Detective Collins.

“What does this mean?””

She took the photograph carefully.

“We need to verify everything before we jump to conclusions.””

“But you believe it?””

She didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Marcus stood near the doorway, silent.

For once, he didn’t try to explain.

He knew this wasn’t his secret to control.

It was mine.

The detective arranged the meeting with Daniel Brooks that afternoon.

I almost refused.

A part of me wanted to run.

I had spent the last few days discovering that everyone I trusted had hidden something from me.

My mother.

My husband.

Now the entire foundation of my identity.

But I needed answers.

Not another person deciding what I could handle.

Daniel was waiting in an interview room at the station.

When I entered, I barely recognized him.

Seven years had aged him.

His hair was gray.

His face was thinner.

But his eyes were the same.

The eyes of someone who carried guilt.

He looked at me.

“Claire.””

Hearing my name from him made my stomach turn.

“You know me.””

He nodded.

“I’ve known you for a long time.””

I sat across from him.

“Then start talking.””

Daniel looked at Detective Collins.

“I need to tell her everything.””

“You should have done that seven years ago,” I said.

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

The silence stretched.

Then he began.

“Your mother and I knew each other before you were born.””

I frowned.

“How?””

“She worked for my family.””

That surprised me.

“She never told me.””

“She wouldn’t.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the table.

“Because she was protecting the biggest secret she ever kept.””

I leaned forward.

“My father.””

He nodded.

“Thomas Carter.””

My chest tightened.

“Was he my biological father?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he said:

“No.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

Even though I was prepared.

Even though I already knew.

It still hurt.

“Then who was?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Me.””

The room disappeared.

I heard nothing.

Not Detective Collins.

Not Marcus.

Not the sound of my own breathing.

Just one word.

Me.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

I stood.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I don’t expect you to believe anything.””

His voice cracked.

“I’m telling you what your mother spent twenty years hiding.””

I stared at him.

“My mother knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she tell me my father abandoned us?””

Daniel looked devastated.

“Because she hated me.””

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because I chose money over you.””

The confession shocked me.

“What?””

“When she found out she was pregnant, she wanted us to be a family.””

He looked away.

“I was young. Stupid. I was building my company. I thought I could fix everything with money.””

“And?””

“And she left.””

I shook my head.

“You abandoned me before I was even born.””

“Yes.””

Daniel didn’t fight it.

“I did.””

For some reason, his honesty hurt more.

Because I wanted him to be a villain.

A monster.

Someone easy to hate.

But instead, he was just another broken person who made choices that destroyed lives.

“What does this have to do with Elijah?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Everything.””

He explained that Thomas Carter had discovered the truth years later.

He found out I was Daniel’s daughter.

He found out my mother had hidden me from Daniel.

And he wanted revenge.

“He used your children to punish you.””

My hands tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he believed Evelyn stole his life.””

I shook my head.

“My mother didn’t steal anything from him.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire, you don’t understand.””

“What?””

“Your mother didn’t just hide your children.””

He paused.

“She hid your memories.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He placed an old medical record on the table.

A hospital document.

My name.

My signature.

A procedure I didn’t remember.

Detective Collins picked it up.

“What is this?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Your mother had doctors erase the record of your first child.””

My heart stopped.

“She couldn’t erase the truth forever.””

I stared at the paper.

My hands went numb.

“How many?””

Daniel looked at me with sadness.

“How many what?””

“How many things did she take from me?””

He didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

Too many.

When I left the station, I felt empty.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Just empty.

Outside, Marcus was waiting.

I looked at him.

He looked like he wanted to speak.

But he stopped himself.

Good.

For once, he let me choose.

That night, I sat with Elijah and Lily.

My two children.

Two people who should have grown up beside me.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

Lily reached for my hand.

“You didn’t know.””

Elijah nodded.

“Grandma made everyone afraid.””

I looked at them.

And I realized something.

My mother spent years controlling the truth.

But she failed at one thing.

She didn’t destroy us.

She brought us back together.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Collins.

I answered immediately.

Her voice sounded urgent.

“Claire, we found Thomas Carter.””

I stood.

“Where?””

“He’s been watching your family for years.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

A pause.

May you like

Then she said:

“Because he knows where your mother hid the final piece of evidence.””
