Chapter 13: The Child Everyone Forgot
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The words on the paper sat between us like a bomb.
*The child Evelyn was protecting was Noah.*
I looked at my youngest son.
My little boy.
The child who had walked into my living room wearing Elijah’s old shirt and accidentally opened the door to the biggest secret of my life.
“No,” I whispered.
Detective Collins studied the message.
“We need to hear Lucas’s explanation.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Claire…”
But I was already shaking my head.
“No more secrets.””
My voice broke.
“No more people deciding what I deserve to know.””
That evening, we sat across from Lucas Carter in an interrogation room.
For the first time, I saw the man who had haunted my family for years.
He didn’t look powerful.
He didn’t look dangerous.
He looked exhausted.
Like someone who had been running from himself for a very long time.
Lucas looked at me.
“You look like Evelyn.””
I hated hearing that name connected to me.
“Everyone says that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I leaned forward.
“Tell me why you wrote that Noah was the child she was protecting.””
Lucas looked at Detective Collins.
“I need to explain everything from the beginning.””
Nobody interrupted.
“Seven years ago, Elijah wasn’t the only child in danger.””
My hands tightened.
“Why?””
“Because someone discovered Noah wasn’t who everyone thought he was.””
The room went silent.
My heart pounded.
“What are you saying?””
Lucas looked at me.
“I’m saying Noah’s disappearance was planned too.””
My blood ran cold.
“Noah never disappeared.””
“Because Evelyn stopped it.””
I felt dizzy.
I remembered that time.
Elijah’s disappearance.
The months of grief.
The years afterward.
Noah was born two years after Elijah vanished.
A child who entered my life when I thought I would never be happy again.
“How could she know?”” I asked.
Lucas looked down.
“Because she found the truth about Marcus.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Marcus went pale.
Again.
The same reaction.
The same fear.
I looked at my husband.
“What truth?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Lucas did.
“When Noah was born, there was a medical complication.””
I frowned.
“I know. He was sick for a few days.””
“No.””
Lucas shook his head.
“That’s not the truth.””
My chest tightened.
“What happened?””
Lucas looked at Marcus.
“Tell her.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
For a moment, I thought he wouldn’t.
Then he whispered:
“Noah isn’t biologically my son.””
The words hurt even though I wasn’t surprised.
Not anymore.
I had learned my entire life could change in a single sentence.
I looked at Noah’s father.
“The truth.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“When Noah was born, the hospital contacted me.””
“Why?””
“Because the DNA test came back.””
I stared.
“You had a DNA test?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Your mother requested one.””
My anger returned.
“Of course she did.””
He continued.
“She knew something was wrong.””
“What was wrong?””
Marcus looked at me.
“She knew Noah was Daniel’s son.””
The room spun.
Daniel.
Again.
My biological father.
My children.
All connected.
I covered my mouth.
“No.””
Lucas nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Marcus.
“And you knew?””
He looked destroyed.
“I found out later.””
“Later?””
“When Noah was three.””
I stood up.
“You knew for four years that Noah wasn’t your biological child?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was his father.””
The answer shocked me.
Not because it fixed anything.
But because I understood.
Marcus loved Noah.
That part was real.
Even if everything else was broken.
“I didn’t care about biology,” Marcus said quietly.
“Then why hide it?””
His eyes filled.
“Because Evelyn told me Lucas was looking for Daniel’s bloodline.””
I looked at Lucas.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel had information that could destroy him.””
Lucas leaned forward.
“And Noah was the only living connection.””
I looked back at Detective Collins.
“So my mother hid Elijah because he survived.””
She nodded.
“And Noah because of who he was.””
I sat down slowly.
My mother had spent years moving my children like pieces on a chessboard.
But for the first time, I understood the fear behind it.
She wasn’t trying to own them.
She was trying to keep them alive.
Lucas reached into his pocket.
“I brought this because I knew eventually you would find out.””
He placed a small envelope on the table.
My name was written on it.
Again.
My mother’s handwriting.
I opened it.
*Claire, if you are reading this, then all my secrets have finally fallen apart.*
I laughed sadly.
She knew.
Even after death, she knew.
The letter continued.
*I am sorry for taking your choices away. I am sorry for making you hate me. But I need you to know one thing.*
I held my breath.
*I never stopped trying to bring your children home.*
A tear fell.
Then I reached the final line.
*The person who first tried to take Elijah was not Lucas. It was someone much closer to you.*
I looked up.
Slowly.
May you like
Everyone followed my gaze.
Marcus.
