Chapter 9: The Woman My Father Never Forgot

Nobody touched the journal.

The sentence Martha spoke remained in the air.

*Emily’s mother wasn’t the only woman he loved.*

I felt something collapse inside me.

Not because I believed Martha.

But because I had spent my entire life believing I knew my mother’s story.

And now every piece of it was changing.

Nick slowly opened the journal.

“Dad.””

His voice was barely audible.

The page was dated three months before Daniel’s death.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

“Nick?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“He wrote about your mother.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did he say?””

Nick hesitated.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Read it.””

He did.

“Her name was Sarah.””

The room froze.

Lily looked confused.

“Who is Sarah?””

Nick kept reading.

“Sarah was someone Daniel knew before he married Martha.””

Martha smiled slightly.

“There.””

Nick looked up.

“Mom.””

“No, let him read.””

Her voice was different.

Almost satisfied.

Like she believed she had finally found something that would save her.

Nick continued.

“Sarah was Emily’s mother.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Nick looked at me.

“Your mother.””

Martha folded her arms.

“So now you understand.””

But I didn’t.

I couldn’t.

Because my mother had never mentioned a woman named Sarah.

Because Sarah was my mother.

And Daniel Carter was not just some stranger from my husband’s past.

He was connected to mine.

Rebecca looked at me sadly.

“Emily…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“My mother never told me.””

“She was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily spoke quietly.

“From Martha.””

Martha rolled her eyes.

“Everything is always my fault.””

Nick looked at her.

“Isn’t it?””

For the first time, Martha looked genuinely hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed for this family.””

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“Sacrifice?””

She stepped closer.

“You destroyed every person who stood between you and power.””

Martha looked away.

Nick turned back to the journal.

The next entry was shorter.

He read aloud.

“Sarah and I made a promise before I married Martha.””

My heart pounded.

“What promise?””

Nick continued.

“If anything happened to me, Sarah’s daughter would be protected.””

I looked at the trust papers.

Everything connected.

The money.

The beneficiary.

The secrets.

But one question remained.

Why?

Why me?

Why would Daniel Carter protect a child he never raised?

Nick turned the page.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“I think you need to see this.””

He handed me the journal.

The handwriting blurred as tears filled my eyes.

The entry was written by Daniel.

Emily,

You will never know how much your mother loved you.

She was the strongest person I ever knew.

When Martha discovered Sarah was pregnant, she tried to force Sarah out of my life.

I refused.

But Martha did something I never expected.

She made a choice that changed all of our lives.

I looked up.

“What choice?””

Nick read the final line.

His voice was quiet.

“She threatened to take Lily away.””

Lily covered her mouth.

“No…”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Because she understood.

Daniel continued:

“Martha told Sarah that if she stayed near me, Lily would disappear and Emily would never know the truth.””

The room became silent.

My mother had not abandoned Lily.

She had been forced.

I looked at Martha.

“You took her daughter away.””

Martha’s eyes flashed.

“I saved her.””

“You stole her.””

“She was young. She was unstable.””

Lily stepped forward.

“You don’t get to talk about my mother like that.””

Martha looked at her.

“You should be grateful.””

The words shocked everyone.

Lily stared.

“Grateful?””

Martha smiled coldly.

“You grew up away from a broken family.””

Rebecca whispered:

“You’re sick.””

Martha ignored her.

Nick looked devastated.

“You knew everything.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me marry Emily without telling her?””

Martha’s expression changed.

“Because I knew the truth would destroy you.””

“No.””

Nick shook his head.

“You were afraid the truth would destroy you.””

Before Martha could answer, the bank manager appeared at the doorway.

“Excuse me.””

Everyone turned.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“But there’s one more item in the box.””

He held a sealed envelope.

“It was marked to be opened only after Daniel Carter’s death was officially investigated.””

Nick took it.

The envelope had one name written on the front.

Not mine.

Not Nick’s.

Not Martha’s.

It said:

*For the child who was stolen.*

Lily and I looked at each other.

May you like

And I knew.

Whatever was inside that envelope would finally reveal the person Martha had been trying to erase all these years.
