Chapter 8: The Box That Held the Truth
The bank was twenty minutes away.
Nobody wanted to leave the estate.
But nobody wanted to stay either.
The wedding guests slowly departed, whispering about what they had witnessed.
The celebration was over.
But the truth had only started arriving.
Nick drove.
I sat beside him.
Lily and Rebecca followed behind us.
Martha refused to come.
At least, that’s what she claimed.
But when we arrived at the bank, she was already standing outside.
Waiting.
Nick stopped walking.
“You followed us.””
Martha crossed her arms.
“I wanted to make sure you didn’t make a mistake.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“The only mistake was trusting you.””
Martha ignored her.
“Nick, please.””
Her voice changed.
Softer.
Almost motherly.
That scared me more than her anger.
Because I knew she was trying to control him again.
“You don’t know what these people are doing to you.””
Nick looked at her.
“They’re showing me the truth.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“They’re destroying your family.””
Nick stared at her.
“You did that.””
For once, Martha had no response.
Inside the bank, the manager led us to a private room.
Lily handed over the key.
The manager checked the records.
Then looked surprised.
“This box hasn’t been opened in twenty-four years.””
Nobody spoke.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a small collection of items.
A handwritten journal.
Several envelopes.
A flash drive.
And one photograph.
Nick picked up the photograph first.
His face changed.
“What?””
I moved closer.
The picture showed three people.
Daniel Carter.
My mother.
And a young Martha.
They were standing outside a hospital.
The date was written on the back.
The same year Lily was born.
Nick looked confused.
“My father knew your mother.””
Rebecca nodded.
“He did.””
“But why?””
Before anyone answered, Lily opened the journal.
The first page had one sentence.
*If Martha finds this, she will destroy everything.*
Everyone froze.
Martha, standing near the door, went completely silent.
Nick looked at her.
“You knew.””
She didn’t deny it.
The journal belonged to Daniel.
Lily began reading.
“My wife has discovered Emily’s mother helped me protect my company. She believes she is entitled to everything because she stood beside me during my success.””
Rebecca whispered:
“She always believed wealth gave her ownership.””
Lily continued.
“Today, Martha threatened Emily’s mother. She said if the truth about Lily became public, she would make sure both children suffered.””
My hands trembled.
My mother had been protecting us.
Both of us.
Nick turned the page.
Then stopped.
“What?””
His voice changed.
He looked at the next entry.
“Read it,” Rebecca said.
Nick swallowed.
“My wife is becoming dangerous. I have moved copies of the evidence to a secure location. If anything happens to me, Martha cannot be allowed to control the company or the trust.””
Nobody moved.
Then Martha spoke.
“You don’t understand.””
Nick looked up.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
“By killing my father?””
Her face twisted.
“I didn’t kill him.””
The words came too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
Nick stared.
“I didn’t ask if you killed him.””
Martha went quiet.
That was the first time she realized what she had admitted.
Lily stepped closer.
“You knew he was going to expose you.””
Martha looked at her.
“You have no idea what happened.””
“Then tell us.””
Martha looked around the room.
At the journal.
The evidence.
Her son.
Me.
Then she whispered:
“Your father wasn’t innocent either.””
Nick frowned.
“What?””
She pointed at the journal.
“He lied to all of you.””
Rebecca looked shocked.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Martha smiled faintly.
A desperate smile.
“You think Daniel was some hero?””
She looked at Nick.
“He had another secret.””
My heart tightened.
“What secret?””
Martha reached for the journal.
But Nick pulled it away.
“Don’t.””
She looked at him.
Then said:
“Ask him why he never told you that Emily’s mother wasn’t the only woman he loved.””
May you like
The room went silent.
And the next page of the journal was still unopened.
