Chapter 12: The Man Behind the Curtain
The abandoned warehouse smelled like dust and old metal.
Every step echoed.
And every instinct told me we had walked into a trap.
Nick stood frozen.
“David.””
The man smiled.
Older now.
Different.
But familiar.
“I’m surprised you remember me.””
Nick’s voice was cold.
“I remember you at my father’s funeral.””
David laughed softly.
“Of course you do.””
“You disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
David looked around the warehouse.
“Because your mother told everyone I was responsible.””
Martha’s name changed the air.
Nick’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re saying my mother framed you?””
David smiled.
“I’m saying your mother has always been better at hiding evidence than creating it.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Where is Martha?””
David looked at her.
“Still protecting her son?””
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
“No. I’m protecting the truth.””
David looked at Lily and me.
Then back at Nick.
“Your father was going to expose both of them.””
Nick frowned.
“Both?””
David nodded.
“Martha wasn’t working alone.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who was she working with?””
David didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his coat.
Nick immediately moved in front of me.
David raised his hands.
“Relax.””
He pulled out a small recorder.
“Your father gave me this.””
Nick stared.
“Why would he trust you?””
“Because he knew I made one mistake.””
“What mistake?””
David looked down.
“I trusted Martha.””
He pressed the button.
A voice filled the warehouse.
Daniel Carter.
Nick froze.
His father’s voice.
“If you’re hearing this, then Martha has already tried to control the story.””
My eyes filled.
Daniel continued.
“She will tell you she did everything for the family.””
A pause.
“She will say she was protecting my son.””
Another pause.
“But the truth is, Martha was protecting someone else.””
Nick looked at David.
“Who?””
The recording continued.
“The person who helped her move the money.””
Everyone went silent.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“And the person who knew about Lily.””
Lily whispered:
“No.””
The recording stopped.
Nick looked furious.
“Who was it?””
David looked at him.
“You’re not going to like the answer.””
Rebecca stepped closer.
“Tell us.””
David sighed.
“The person who helped Martha was…”
Before he could finish, the warehouse lights suddenly shut off.
A loud crash echoed behind us.
I felt someone grab my arm.
I screamed.
Nick immediately turned.
“Emily!””
The lights flickered back on.
Everyone was there.
Except David.
And except the recorder.
On the ground was a single envelope.
Nick picked it up.
Inside was a photograph.
He looked at it.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
The photo showed Martha.
Standing beside another person.
A person I recognized.
A person I never expected.
My blood ran cold.
Because the person next to Martha was not a stranger.
It was someone who had been at my wedding.
Someone who had smiled at me.
Someone who had watched my hair fall to the floor.
Nick whispered:
“My God.””
May you like
And on the back of the photograph was a message:
*The person you trusted most is the one who betrayed you.*
