Chapter 14: The Final Confession
The message changed everything.
Nobody spoke.
The car engine was running.
The documents were packed.
But those three words sat between us.
*Don’t trust Rebecca.*
Nick looked at his aunt.
Rebecca looked hurt.
“After everything?””
Nick didn’t answer.
Because the terrifying truth was…
We didn’t know who to trust anymore.
Rebecca looked at me.
“Emily, I know how this looks.””
I watched her carefully.
“Do you?””
She nodded.
“Because Martha has spent years making everyone believe the worst about me.””
Lily looked at her.
“Then tell us the truth.””
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“I should have done it twenty years ago.””
The car became silent.
“What do you mean?”” Nick asked.
Rebecca took a breath.
“Daniel didn’t just ask me to protect the trust.””
She looked at me.
“He asked me to protect Emily.””
My heart tightened.
“From who?””
Rebecca looked away.
“From everyone.””
The answer was painful.
But honest.
She continued.
“After Sarah died, Daniel was terrified. He knew Martha was becoming unstable.””
Nick frowned.
“My mother was unstable?””
Rebecca nodded.
“She believed everyone was trying to take something from her.””
Lily whispered:
“And Victoria?””
Rebecca looked at her.
“Victoria fed that fear.””
She explained.
Victoria had convinced Martha that Sarah’s daughters would eventually destroy Nick’s inheritance.
She convinced her that removing us was the only way to protect the Carter name.
“But why help her?”” Nick asked.
Rebecca answered:
“Because Victoria wanted Charlotte to marry you.””
Everything came back.
The arrangement.
The money.
The wedding.
All of it.
Nick looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Not now.””
We reached the location.
An old private property outside the city.
The same place where Daniel had once stored business records.
We entered carefully.
Inside, we found Martha.
Alive.
But barely.
She was sitting on the floor.
Victoria stood behind her.
Holding a folder.
“You came.””
Nick stepped forward.
“Let her go.””
Victoria smiled.
“You sound just like your father.””
Martha looked at Nick.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Victoria laughed.
“That’s funny coming from you.””
Nick stared at her.
“What do you want?””
Victoria lifted the folder.
“The trust documents.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“You won’t get them.””
Victoria smiled.
“Rebecca.””
The way she said her name made everyone freeze.
“You still pretend you’re innocent.””
Rebecca’s face changed.
Victoria looked at us.
“Do you know why Daniel trusted Rebecca?””
Nobody answered.
“Because he thought she was loyal.””
She laughed.
“He was wrong.””
Nick looked at Rebecca.
“No.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“Don’t listen.””
Victoria opened the folder.
Inside were old documents.
“Rebecca helped Daniel hide the trust.””
Nick stared.
“Yes.””
Victoria smiled.
“But she also helped Martha cover up the investigation.””
The silence was unbearable.
Rebecca whispered:
“I was trying to protect Lily.””
Lily looked devastated.
“What?””
Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.
“Martha threatened to take you away permanently.””
Victoria smiled.
“There it is.””
The truth.
Not simple.
Not clean.
Everyone had made terrible choices.
Rebecca had hidden things.
Martha had destroyed lives.
Victoria had manipulated everyone.
Nick looked at Rebecca.
“You knew?””
Rebecca nodded.
“I knew pieces.””
“And you lied?””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“I thought keeping the truth hidden would prevent more pain.””
I looked at her.
“That’s what everyone says.””
Nobody answered.
Because it was true.
Every person who hurt us claimed they were protecting us.
Victoria stepped forward.
“Enough.””
She reached for the documents.
But Martha suddenly moved.
She grabbed Victoria’s arm.
“You ruined everything.””
Victoria shoved her away.
“You were always weak.””
Nick moved instantly.
Security arrived moments later.
The struggle ended quickly.
Victoria was taken away.
Martha sat on the floor.
Broken.
For the first time, she looked small.
Nick walked toward her.
She looked up.
“I’m sorry.””
He didn’t answer.
Because some wounds were too deep for one apology.
Then Martha looked at me.
“Emily.””
I stopped.
“There’s something you still don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She looked at the documents.
“The trust was never only money.””
A chill moved through me.
“Then what was it?””
Martha whispered:
“It was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
May you like
She looked toward Nick.
“Proof that Daniel knew who his real enemy was.””
