Chapter 10: The Child Who Was Stolen

Nobody wanted to open the envelope.

That was the strangest part.

After everything we had discovered—the lies, the money, the threats, the hidden daughter—this small white envelope felt heavier than all of it.

Nick held it carefully.

Like it might break.

Or like it might break us.

The bank manager quietly left the room.

The four of us stood there in silence.

Me.

Nick.

Lily.

And Martha.

The woman who had spent years controlling every secret was now watching someone else hold the truth.

Nick looked at the writing on the envelope.

“For the child who was stolen.””

His voice cracked.

“Dad knew.””

Rebecca nodded.

“He knew everything.””

Martha stepped forward.

“Nick, don’t open that.””

Everyone turned.

It was almost unbelievable.

After all her lies, after everything she had done, she was still trying to give orders.

Nick stared at her.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because you don’t know what’s inside.””

“Neither do you.””

A pause.

Then Martha said quietly:

“Yes, I do.””

The room froze.

Lily’s face changed.

“You saw this?””

Martha didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Nick opened the envelope.

Inside was a single letter.

He unfolded it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he handed it to me.

I hesitated.

“Why me?””

“Because it’s about you.””

My hands trembled as I took it.

The handwriting was Daniel’s.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then the truth finally escaped the people who buried it.

I am sorry.

I am sorry that my choices created pain for you.

But I need you to know one thing.

You were never unwanted.

Your mother loved you.

She loved Lily.

And she fought harder than anyone to protect both of you.

I looked at Lily.

She was crying silently.

The letter continued.

When Martha discovered Sarah had given birth to Lily, she made a decision that changed everything.

She told Sarah that if she tried to keep Lily, she would destroy her.

She used money.

Power.

Fear.

She made Sarah believe she had no choice.

My vision blurred.

My mother.

The woman I remembered as gentle and quiet.

She had been carrying that pain alone.

Nick read over my shoulder.

His face was full of guilt.

Daniel’s letter continued.

Martha did not stop there.

When Sarah had Emily, Martha tried to remove her from my life completely.

She believed if she controlled my family, she controlled my legacy.

I looked up.

“Legacy?””

Rebecca answered softly.

“The trust.””

I nodded.

The letter continued.

The trust was never about money.

It was about protection.

I created it so my daughters would always have something Martha could not take.

My daughters.

The words hit me.

Lily covered her face.

Nick looked at her.

“You’re my sister.””

She laughed through tears.

“I think I always knew.””

“What?””

She looked at him.

“Your father was the only person who ever tried to find me.””

Nick looked away.

Pain crossed his face.

“I spent my whole life not knowing you existed.””

Lily smiled sadly.

“I spent my whole life knowing someone was missing.””

The moment was broken by Martha.

“You’re all acting like I’m some monster.””

Nobody answered.

Because we didn’t need to.

Martha looked at Nick.

“I loved you.””

Nick’s expression softened for half a second.

Then hardened.

“Love doesn’t look like this.””

Her eyes filled.

“I did everything for you.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You did everything to control me.””

Martha stepped closer.

“I was trying to protect our family.””

Rebecca interrupted.

“No.””

She pointed at Martha.

“You were protecting your place in it.””

Martha suddenly looked exhausted.

Not defeated.

Desperate.

“You think you know everything.””

Nick frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the letter.

Then at me.

“You still don’t know the biggest secret.””

A chill went through me.

“What secret?””

Martha smiled faintly.

“Daniel didn’t just leave you money.””

Nick stared.

“What else?””

She looked directly at Lily.

“He left her something too.””

Lily froze.

“What?””

Martha’s smile widened.

“Proof.””

The room went quiet.

“Proof of what?””

Martha didn’t answer.

She simply said:

“Your father knew someone would come after him.””

Rebecca’s face changed.

Because she understood.

Martha looked at Nick.

“And he was right.””

At that moment, Nick’s phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.
