Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in the Trust
“Charlotte.””
The name left Martha’s mouth like a weapon.
For a moment, I didn’t understand.
Then everything clicked.
Charlotte.
The woman Martha always praised.
The woman she wanted Nick to marry.
The woman whose family was promised $250,000 if my wedding failed.
I looked at Nick.
He looked just as confused.
“What does Charlotte have to do with this?””
Martha folded her arms.
“Ask Rebecca.””
Everyone turned.
Rebecca slowly picked up the folder from the floor.
“Martha, don’t.””
“Why not?”” Martha said.
“They deserve the truth.””
My heartbeat quickened.
“Someone explain.””
Rebecca looked at me with sadness.
“Emily…”
She stopped.
Like she was choosing every word carefully.
“Your mother had a daughter before you.””
The world seemed to stop.
I blinked.
“What?””
Nick looked at me.
I could barely hear him.
“Emily, did you know about this?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My mother had never told me.
Never.
Rebecca looked at Martha.
“You knew this would destroy her.””
Martha’s expression was cold.
“I knew the truth had to come out eventually.””
I stepped backward.
“My mother had another child?””
Rebecca nodded.
“She had a daughter before you. A baby she gave up for adoption.””
My hands went numb.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
Rebecca looked at the trust papers.
“Because that child was connected to your father’s promise.””
Nick took the papers.
“Wait.””
He looked at the beneficiary information.
“This doesn’t say Emily.””
My heart sank.
He was right.
The documents had a legal name.
Not mine.
Someone else’s.
Rebecca whispered:
“Her name was Lily.””
The same name.
The same daughter from the photograph.
My stomach twisted.
“No.””
Rebecca quickly shook her head.
“Not my Lily.””
She looked at me.
“Your mother named her daughter Lily before she was adopted.””
I felt like the room was spinning.
“So the trust was for my mother’s first child?””
“Yes.””
“Then why is my name on it?””
Nobody answered.
Then Nick looked at Martha.
“Because you changed it.””
Martha’s face hardened.
“I corrected a mistake.””
The words were disgusting.
I stared at her.
“You changed legal documents?””
“I protected this family.””
“You stole from someone.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Nick stepped forward.
“Mom, did you know about Emily’s sister?””
Martha looked away.
That was enough.
“You knew,” Nick whispered.
Rebecca’s voice softened.
“Your father discovered the truth years ago.””
Nick looked at her.
“What truth?””
“That the child your mother gave up wasn’t lost.””
A silence followed.
Then Rebecca said:
“She was alive.””
My breath caught.
I looked at Nick.
My whole life had been built on missing pieces.
A mother with secrets.
A father I never knew.
A sister I never knew existed.
And somehow Martha had been standing in the middle of it all.
Nick ran a hand through his hair.
“Where is she?””
Rebecca looked toward the entrance.
And my heart stopped.
Because she wasn’t looking at Martha.
She wasn’t looking at Nick.
She was looking behind me.
I slowly turned.
The reception doors opened.
A woman stood there.
She looked around thirty years old.
Her eyes were red.
Her hands were trembling.
And when she looked at me…
I knew.
I didn’t know how.
But I knew.
Rebecca whispered:
“Emily, meet your sister.””
Nobody spoke.
The woman stepped inside.
“I didn’t want to come here.””
Her voice cracked.
“But I needed to see the person who got everything I lost.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
She looked at the ruined ends of my hair.
Then at Martha.
“You really did it again.””
Martha froze.
“Lily…”
The woman’s face hardened.
“Don’t call me that.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Nick looked at Rebecca.
“Is this…”
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
The woman looked at me.
“My name is Lily.””
I felt tears forming.
“Why did you come?””
She looked down.
Then she reached into her bag.
And pulled out a photograph.
A photograph of my mother.
My mother holding a baby.
A baby who wasn’t me.
Lily’s voice shook.
“Because your mother left me one final message.””
She handed me the photo.
On the back were six handwritten words.
I read them.

And my entire body went cold.
*“Trust no one in the Carter family.””*
