Chapter 9: The Husband Who Knew More Than He Said

I turned slowly.

Daniel was standing near the doorway.

And the expression on his face told me everything.

He had seen the name.

He knew.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The man who had spent the last two days demanding answers was now the one holding a secret.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

Emily stepped between us.

“Dad?””

His eyes filled with pain.

“I didn’t know everything.””

My heart pounded.

“But you knew something.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

I felt betrayed in a way I couldn’t explain.

Not because he had hidden a secret.

Because he had made me feel crazy for searching for the truth.

“You knew about the adoption?””

“No.””

“Then what did you know?””

He looked at Emily.

“I knew your grandfather was investigating Michael Carter.””

“That’s all?””

Daniel hesitated.

And that hesitation destroyed me.

“No.””

He sat down.

“When I was younger, before we got married, Michael Carter hired me.””

I stared.

“You worked for him?””

Daniel nodded.

“I was twenty-five. I needed money.””

Emily looked confused.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Michael asked me to deliver some documents.””

“What documents?””

He looked at me.

“Adoption records.””

My breathing stopped.

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“How many years?””

His silence answered.

“Eighteen.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“You delivered Emily’s records?””

“No.””

He stood quickly.

“I never opened them. I didn’t know what they were.””

“But you knew they existed.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I didn’t know they were connected to you.””

I laughed.

A broken, painful laugh.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I found out later.””

“Found out what?””

Daniel looked at Emily.

“That Michael Carter had been watching your family.””

A chill moved through me.

“Why?””

Daniel looked destroyed.

“Because he was afraid someone would uncover the truth.””

My mother stepped forward.

“You should have told Sarah.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I was afraid you would think I was involved.””

I stared at him.

“You were right.””

He lowered his head.

“I deserve that.””

Emily started crying.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

That sentence hurt more than anything.

I walked toward her.

“Emily…”

She stepped back.

Not far.

But enough.

Enough to remind me how much damage had already been done.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

Slowly, he turned the phone around.

The caller ID showed a name.

A name that made my blood run cold.

Michael Carter.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through.

Calm.

Confident.

Like someone who had never been afraid of consequences.

“Daniel.””

The room listened.

“I was wondering when Sarah would finally learn the truth.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

Michael laughed softly.

“Still protecting her, I see.””

My hands shook.

“Put it on speaker.””

Daniel did.

Michael continued.

“You all think I’m the villain.””

Nobody responded.

“But you don’t know what Sarah’s father did.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Michael ignored her.

“He told Sarah she adopted Emily because he wanted to protect her.””

A pause.

“But the truth is…”

His voice lowered.

“He chose Emily because she was the only child who could expose him.””

I froze.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael answered immediately.

“Ask your father why he erased the second name from Emily’s birth records.””

My stomach dropped.

“What second name?””

Silence.

Then Michael said:

“The name of her real mother.””

Emily grabbed my hand.

“Mom?””

Michael’s voice came one final time.

“You’ve spent eighteen years looking for the wrong secret.””

The call ended.

And on Daniel’s phone, a new message appeared.

A photo.

A birth certificate.

With one name highlighted.

The mother listed on Emily’s original record.

I looked at it.

And whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

May you like

Because the name written there…

Was mine.
