Chapter 6: The File Hidden for Eighteen Years
The photograph was taken three days earlier.
The same day my father left the country.
The same day my mother told me he disappeared.
Except he wasn’t running alone.
He was with the man who had just become the center of the biggest secret my family had ever hidden.
Dr. Michael Carter.
Emily stared at the picture.
“That’s him.””
I looked at her.
“You know him?””
She nodded slowly.
“He came to Grandpa’s house last month.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Why didn’t you tell us?””
Emily looked ashamed.
“Because Grandpa told me not to.””
I closed my eyes.
Again.
That sentence.
Again.
Everyone had been protecting something.
Everyone except me.
“What happened when he came?””
Emily took a breath.
“He argued with Grandpa.””
“About what?””
She looked at the photo.
“About the records.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did he say?””
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“He said, ‘You can’t undo what happened eighteen years ago.’”
The room went cold.
I looked at the notebook again.
My father had known.
He had known for years.
And he had carried the weight alone.
“We need to find your grandfather,” I said.
Daniel nodded.
“How?””
I looked at the message.
The number was still there.
The person who sent it wanted us to know.
They wanted us to follow.
I typed one question.
*Who are you?*
The response came instantly.
*Someone who failed Emily once. I won’t fail her again.*
My heart raced.
I typed:
*Where is my father?*
The answer took longer.
Then:
*He is alive. But he is running out of time.*
I looked at Daniel.
“We have to go.””
“To where?””
The next message appeared.
An address.
A storage facility outside town.
Emily grabbed her coat.
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
She stopped.
“Mom.””
I looked at her.
“You’ve been carrying this alone for too long.””
She blinked.
I softened my voice.
“But you’re still my daughter. And I’m not leaving you behind.””
For the first time in days, Emily reached for my hand.
We drove in silence.
The storage facility was almost empty.
Rows of metal doors stretched into the darkness.
A security light flickered above us.
At the front desk, an old man looked up.
“Can I help you?””
I showed him the address.
His expression changed.
“You’re Sarah.””
I froze.
“How do you know?””
He sighed.
“Because your father told me you would come.””
He reached under the desk and pulled out a key.
“Unit 214.””
My fingers closed around it.
“Was he here?””
The old man nodded.
“Yesterday.””
“Where is he now?””
The man looked away.
“He left a message.””
“What message?””
He handed me an envelope.
My father’s handwriting was on the front.
*For Sarah. When she finally knows the truth.*
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Only three pages.
But the first sentence made my entire body go numb.
*Sarah, I’m sorry I lied to you. The night you adopted Emily, I didn’t save her from losing a family. I saved her from losing her life.*
I looked at Emily.
She was crying.
Daniel read over my shoulder.
The letter continued.
*Michael Carter was never Emily’s father. He was the reason she needed to be hidden.*
I stopped breathing.
Because below that sentence was another one.
One that changed everything.
*And Sarah… the person who helped me hide Emily was someone you trusted more than anyone.*
A sound echoed behind us.
A door closing.
We turned.
At the end of the hallway, a figure stood in the shadows.
Watching us.
Then the person stepped forward.
And Emily whispered:
“Mom…”
May you like
Her voice shook.
“That’s the person Grandpa warned me about.””
