Chapter 4: The Address My Father Left Behind

The address beneath the ring belonged to a place I had driven past hundreds of times but never noticed.

A small blue house at the edge of town.

The kind of house people forgot existed.

The kind of house that looked like it had been waiting for someone who might never come back.

I parked across the street with my hands locked around the steering wheel.

Emily sat beside me.

Daniel was in the back seat, silent for most of the drive.

Nobody knew what to say anymore.

The world we had lived in yesterday was gone.

“I should go alone,” I whispered.

Emily immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Emily—”

“No, Mom.””

Her voice was stronger than I expected.

“I’ve been alone with this secret for months.””

I looked at her.

The pain in her eyes was something I had missed because I was too busy believing I knew everything about her.

Daniel opened the car door.

“I’m coming too.””

Emily looked at him.

“You’re still angry.””

He looked down.

“I was.””

A pause.

“Now I’m just trying to understand.””

The three of us walked toward the house.

The front yard was covered in fallen leaves. The windows were dusty. There was no car in the driveway.

My father had chosen this place carefully.

He wanted someone to find it.

But only after he was gone.

I knocked.

Nothing.

I knocked again.

Then the door slowly opened.

A woman stood there.

She looked around my father’s age.

Her face went pale when she saw me.

“Sarah?””

My entire body froze.

“How do you know my name?””

She stared at Emily.

Then back at me.

“Because I’ve been waiting eighteen years to meet you.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“My name is Rebecca.””

She looked at Emily.

“And I’m her grandmother.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“What?””

The woman stepped back.

“I know this is confusing.””

“No,” I said.

My voice shook.

“This is impossible.””

Rebecca looked at me sadly.

“Your father told me you would say that.””

“Where is my father?””

Her expression changed.

“He left because he was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at Emily.

“Of the truth coming out.””

We entered the house.

Inside, everything was preserved like someone had walked away yesterday.

There were boxes stacked along the walls.

Old photographs.

Documents.

Memories.

A whole life hidden away.

Rebecca led us into the living room.

“Your father came here every month.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

“To make sure Emily was safe.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Safe from who?””

Rebecca didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at me.

“Sarah, do you remember the night you adopted Emily?””

I swallowed.

“Of course.””

I remembered every second.

The hospital.

The tiny baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

The way I cried when I held her.

The way I promised her I would protect her forever.

Rebecca nodded.

“You were told she was abandoned.””

“Yes.””

“That wasn’t true.””

The words felt like a physical blow.

“What?””

Rebecca walked to a cabinet and pulled out a folder.

“I was there that night.””

My hands started trembling.

“Who are you?””

She opened the folder.

“I was Emily’s birth mother.””

Emily gasped.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

Rebecca looked at Emily.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

Emily stared at her.

“You’re my mother?””

Rebecca nodded.

“I was eighteen when I had you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“So why did you give her away?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“Because I thought she would have a safer life with you.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“Your father helped arrange everything.””

I looked at the folder.

“What does my father have to do with this?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“He was the only person who knew the full story.””

My stomach tightened.

“Full story?””

She handed me a document.

At the top was my name.

Then Emily’s.

Then another name.

The father’s name.

I stared.

My eyes moved across the page.

And I stopped.

Because I recognized it.

I knew that name.

Everyone in town knew that name.

A respected doctor.

A man who had attended our family dinners.

A man my father had called his closest friend.

Daniel saw my expression.

“Who is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

Emily took the paper from my hand.

Her eyes scanned the page.

Then she whispered:

“No.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“That’s why your grandfather ran.””

Emily looked at me.

“Mom…”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“Why is your name written next to his?””
