Chapter 2: The Secret My Parents Already Knew

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat on the edge of my bed while Daniel paced the room, holding the ring like it was evidence in a crime.

“Sarah,” he said quietly, “tell me I’m wrong.””

I stared at the floor.

“I don’t know what you want me to say.””

“My daughter has a ring hidden under her mattress. Your father’s handwriting is on the note. She won’t tell us who the father is.””

His voice cracked.

“Do you understand how impossible this looks?””

I closed my eyes.

I did understand.

That was the worst part.

By sunrise, I was already driving to my parents’ house.

I didn’t tell Daniel where I was going.

I didn’t tell Emily.

I just needed answers.

The entire drive, memories kept appearing in my mind.

My father teaching Emily how to fish when she was six.

My father taking her for ice cream every Sunday.

My father telling everyone that Emily was “the greatest gift our family ever received.””

I had always been grateful for their bond.

Now every memory felt different.

The front door of my parents’ house was unlocked.

I pushed it open.

“Mom?””

No answer.

I walked into the living room.

My mother, Linda, was sitting in her favorite chair beside the window, calmly drinking tea.

She looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

“Where is Dad?”” I demanded.

She looked up.

“Sarah?””

I threw the ring onto the coffee table.

The gold band landed beside her teacup.

“Where is he?””

My mother stared at the ring.

She didn’t look surprised.

She didn’t ask where I got it.

She didn’t ask why I was angry.

She just placed her cup down slowly.

That was when I knew.

She already knew.

“Mom,” I whispered.

Her face changed slightly.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No, don’t say my name like everything is normal.””

She looked away.

“Where is Dad?””

For several seconds, there was only the sound of the clock ticking.

Then she answered.

“Your father left the country this morning.””

My knees almost gave out.

“What?””

“He had a flight early.””

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Why did he leave?””

My mother’s hands trembled.

That was the first real emotion I saw from her.

Fear.

“And where is Emily’s adoption file?”” she asked.

I froze.

“What did you say?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The records.””

I stared at her.

“What records?””

My mother looked at me like she was seeing me as a child again.

“Sarah, there are things you don’t know.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, you don’t get to do this. Not today.””

My mother stood.

“Your father took Emily’s adoption records with him.””

The room spun.

“Why would he have Emily’s adoption records?””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“Because he was there.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

“There when?””

She sat back down.

“Before you brought Emily home.””

I felt my breathing change.

“What are you talking about?””

My mother looked toward the window.

“Your father wanted to tell you for years.””

“Tell me what?””

Her voice dropped.

“That Emily’s adoption was never as simple as you believed.””

I backed away.

“No.””

“Sarah—”

“No.””

I picked up the ring.

“No, Emily is my daughter.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you talking like she isn’t?””

My mother began crying.

“Because she is your daughter.””

She paused.

“But she is also connected to something your father spent eighteen years trying to hide.””

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked down.

Emily was calling.

I answered immediately.

“Emily?””

At first, there was only silence.

Then I heard her crying.

“Mom?””

“I’m here.””

Her voice shook.

“Where are you?””

“I’m at Grandma’s house.””

The silence on the other end was terrifying.

Then Emily whispered:

“Did you find out?””

I looked at my mother.

“What am I supposed to know?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“Mom…”

Her voice cracked.

“Grandpa told me you would come here when you found the ring.””

I felt frozen.

“How did he know?””

Emily didn’t answer.

May you like

Then she said the sentence that changed everything.

“Because Grandpa is the one who gave me the ring.””
