Chapter 13: The Truth My Family Buried

The name on the paper stayed in my mind like a scream.

I read it again.

Then again.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

*Father of Emily’s baby: Michael Carter.*

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Emily made a sound I had never heard from her before.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Pain.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“No, that’s not possible.””

I grabbed the paper.

“That can’t be right.””

Rachel looked at me.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I looked at Emily.

“No.””

My daughter was crying.

“I knew something was wrong.””

My heart broke.

“What do you mean?””

She wiped her face.

“When Grandpa told me not to tell anyone, I thought he was protecting me.””

She looked at the paper.

“But he was protecting everyone.””

Daniel’s face had gone pale.

“Michael Carter…”

He couldn’t finish.

I understood why.

For eighteen years, that man had been around our family.

He attended birthdays.

He sat at our dinner table.

He held Emily when she was a baby.

The thought made me sick.

Rachel took the paper from my hand.

“This isn’t the whole story.””

I looked at her.

“What else could there possibly be?””

Rachel opened the letter again.

“There’s a second page.””

My hands trembled.

She turned it over.

The handwriting continued.

*Sarah, if Emily reads this, she must know the truth. Michael Carter is not her biological father. He only believes he is.*

The room froze.

Emily looked up.

“What?””

I grabbed the letter.

I read faster.

*The DNA report Michael saw was altered. He has spent eighteen years chasing a lie.*

I stopped.

A wave of confusion hit me.

“Then why would he think he’s the father?””

Rachel answered.

“Because someone wanted him to.””

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone stared.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Sarah.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

“Mom?””

My mother’s voice trembled.

“Listen to me carefully. You need to leave that apartment.””

“Why?””

“Because Michael knows Rachel told you.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“How?””

My mother ignored him.

“Sarah, he is not the only person who has been lying.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Your father changed one thing in the records.””

“What?””

“The father’s name.””

I felt dizzy.

“Why?””

“Because he was trying to protect someone.””

“Who?””

My mother started crying.

“Your husband.””

Everyone went silent.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel looked at me.

“What did she say?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know what was worse.

That my family had lied to me.

Or that the person I trusted most might have been part of it.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

“I didn’t know.””

The room exploded.

Rachel stood.

“You knew something.””

“I knew Michael was hiding things.””

“You worked for him.””

“I was young.””

“You delivered records.””

“I never knew what they were!””

Emily looked between us.

“Dad…”

Daniel turned toward her.

“I swear to you, I never hurt you.””

She looked broken.

“Then why does everyone’s secret involve you?””

He had no answer.

Then the apartment lights went out.

Everything became darkness.

A sound came from the hallway.

The door.

Someone was outside.

Rachel whispered:

“He found us.””

Daniel moved immediately.

“Everyone stay back.””

The door handle turned.

Once.

Twice.

Then the lock broke.

A man stepped inside.

Not Michael.

Someone else.

Someone older.

Someone I recognized.

My father’s closest friend.

The man who had comforted me after my adoption.

The man who had attended every family event.

He looked at me sadly.

“Sarah.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who are you?””

He sighed.

“You really don’t remember me?””

I stared.

Then Emily whispered:

“Grandpa’s friend.””

The man nodded.

“I was the one who helped your father hide Emily.””

I stepped forward.

“Why?””

His eyes moved to the letter in my hand.

“Because your father was trying to protect you from the truth.””

“What truth?””

He looked at Emily.

“The baby she carries is not connected to Michael Carter.””

A pause.

“It’s connected to me.””

Nobody breathed.

Then Emily screamed.

And the man said the words that destroyed everything.

“I am Emily’s biological father.””
