Chapter 5: The Man My Father Protected
I didn’t remember leaving the house.
One second I was standing there with the paper in my hand.
The next, I was sitting in the car, staring at the windshield while rain began falling.
Daniel sat beside me.
Emily was in the back seat.
Nobody spoke.
The name on that document sat between us like a bomb.
Dr. Michael Carter.
The man who had delivered Emily.
The man who had signed her birth records.
The man everyone trusted.
Including me.
“I don’t understand,” Daniel finally said.
His voice was quiet.
“How could someone like that be involved?””
I looked back at Emily.
She was holding the document against her chest.
“I knew something was wrong,” she whispered.
I turned around.
“What?””
She looked embarrassed.
“Before the pregnancy.””
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?””
Emily looked out the window.
“Grandpa started acting different around me last year.””
Daniel frowned.
“Different how?””
“He kept asking if I was happy.””
I felt a chill.
“Why?””
“Because he said I deserved to know where I came from.””
I closed my eyes.
My father had been trying to tell me.
But he hadn’t trusted me with the truth.
“You should have told me,” I whispered.
Emily looked at me.
“I wanted to.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because Grandpa said if I told you too soon, you would protect the wrong person.””
My heart stopped.
“The wrong person?””
Emily nodded.
“He said the person who hurt us wasn’t the person everyone suspected.””
Daniel turned around.
“Everyone suspected someone?””
Emily looked down.
“I think Grandpa did.””
Before I could ask more, my phone rang.
The number was unknown.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Sarah Davis?””
I stood up.
“Yes.””
“You found the house.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who is this?””
The man ignored my question.
“Your father was supposed to destroy those documents.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Put it on speaker.””
I did.
The voice continued.
“Your family has spent eighteen years pretending everything was an accident.””
My hands shook.
“What do you want?””
A pause.
Then:
“I want you to stop digging.””
The call ended.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“We’re going to the police.””
“No,” Emily said.
Her voice was immediate.
“No.””
We all looked at her.
“Why not?””
She swallowed.
“Because Grandpa said this would happen.””
I stared.
“What exactly did he tell you?””
She reached into her bag.
Slowly, she pulled out a small notebook.
“I wasn’t supposed to show anyone.””
“Emily.””
“I found it in Grandpa’s study.””
She opened it.
The pages were filled with my father’s handwriting.
Dates.
Names.
Notes.
A record of everything he had been hiding.
I turned the pages.
Most of it was about Emily.
But then I saw my own name.
*Sarah still believes the adoption was random. She cannot know the truth until I find proof.*
I kept reading.
The next line made my hands go numb.
*Michael Carter knows I have the records. He knows I know what happened that night.*
Daniel leaned closer.
“What happened that night?””
I turned the page.
There was only one sentence.
One sentence my father had written so hard the paper was almost torn.
*Emily was never abandoned. She was taken.*
The room went silent.
Emily covered her mouth.
Daniel looked at me.
And I felt the terrifying truth settling in.
For eighteen years, I had believed I rescued my daughter.
But what if someone had stolen her first?
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, it included a photograph.
A recent photograph.
My father.
Standing outside an airport.
May you like
And beside him…
Dr. Michael Carter.
