Chapter 11: The Sister Who Came Back From The Dead
I spent the night staring at the photograph.
A photograph that should not exist.
My sister Rachel had died when she was twelve years old.
That was the story I had carried my entire life.
A car accident.
A rainy road.
A funeral where I was too young to understand why everyone kept telling me to be strong.
But now there she was.
Alive.
Standing beside a hospital.
Holding a baby.
My baby.
Or Emily’s.
Or someone else’s.
I didn’t know anything anymore.
The next morning, I drove to the address written on the back of the photograph.
Daniel insisted on coming.
Emily did too.
None of us trusted secrets anymore.
The address led us to a small apartment building two towns away.
My hands shook as I knocked.
Nobody answered.
I knocked again.
Then a voice came from inside.
“Who is it?””
I stopped breathing.
Because I knew that voice.
Even after eighteen years.
“Rachel?””
Silence.
The door opened slightly.
A woman appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
My sister stared at me.
And whispered:
“Sarah.””
The world disappeared.
I didn’t hug her.
I didn’t cry.
I just stood there.
Because my mind couldn’t accept what my eyes were seeing.
“You’re alive.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“How?””
She looked away.
“That’s a long story.””
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
“Everyone in my family has a long story.””
Rachel looked behind me.
At Emily.
And her expression changed.
“Oh.””
That single word terrified me.
“You know her.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Emily stepped forward.
“How?””
Rachel covered her mouth.
“She looks just like you.””
I froze.
“Like me?””
Rachel looked at Emily.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Like your mother.””
The room went silent.
We entered the apartment.
Rachel made tea.
A normal thing.
A completely normal thing.
And somehow that made everything worse.
Because my dead sister was sitting across from me like she had simply been away on vacation.
“Start talking,” I said.
Rachel looked at me.
“I deserved that.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“When I was twelve, the accident happened.””
My heart tightened.
“I remember.””
“You remember what they told you.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What do you mean?””
Rachel looked down.
“The car accident was real.””
I waited.
“But I didn’t die.””
I felt dizzy.
“Then why did everyone say you did?””
“Because I needed to disappear.””
“Why?””
Rachel looked at Emily.
“Because of her.””
Emily went still.
“Me?””
Rachel nodded.
“When I found out what Michael Carter had done, I tried to expose him.””
Daniel frowned.
“What did he do?””
Rachel’s expression darkened.
“He was involved in illegal adoption schemes.””
My stomach turned.
“Emily?””
“Yes.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Emily was one of the babies affected.””
Emily whispered:
“But Mom’s name was on my birth certificate.””
Rachel nodded.
“Because Michael changed the records.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because he needed to hide the fact that Sarah was connected.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
Rachel leaned forward.
“Your father discovered the truth.””
“And?””
“He found out Emily wasn’t supposed to be placed with you.””
I held my breath.
“Then why was she?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Because you were the only person Michael never expected to fight him.””
I stared.
“Why me?””
Rachel’s eyes softened.
“Because Michael knew you loved that child more than anything.””
A silence followed.
Then Emily asked:
“Who was my birth mother?””
Rachel looked at her.
And I already knew I wasn’t ready for the answer.
Rachel reached into a drawer.
She pulled out a folder.
“I kept this because I knew one day you would need it.””
She handed it to Emily.
Emily opened it.
The first page was a hospital record.
The second was a DNA report.
The third was a photograph.
A photograph of a young woman.
Emily stared.
“Who is she?””
Rachel looked at me.
Then at Emily.
“She’s the reason your grandfather disappeared.””
My voice trembled.
“Who?””
Rachel whispered:
“Your biological mother.””
Emily looked down.
Then she saw the name.
And she dropped the papers.
Because the woman in the photograph…
Was someone we all knew.
Someone still alive.
May you like
Someone who had been sitting in our house two days earlier.
My mother.
