Chapter 9: The Accident That Wasn’t an Accident
I drove home without remembering the drive.
The streets passed.
The lights changed.
People walked by.
But my mind was trapped years earlier.
The night Lily’s mother died.
The night that changed everything.
I had always remembered it the same way.
A rainy road.
A phone call.
A police officer standing at my door.
A sentence that shattered my life.
“She didn’t make it.””
I had never questioned it.
Why would I?
Because grief doesn’t leave room for suspicion.
It leaves room only for survival.
When I arrived home, Vanessa was waiting.
She was sitting in the dark living room.
“You met him.””
It wasn’t a question.
I closed the door.
“Marcus told me everything.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“He’s lying.””
“Is he?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he show me your emails?””
Silence.
I walked closer.
“Why did you research my family before we met?””
She looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
I laughed.
“You planned my life.””
“No.””
“You planned my daughter’s future.””
She stood.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
“From what?””
“From ending up with nothing.””
I stared at her.
There it was.
Not an apology.
Not regret.
Fear.
“You married me for security.””
“I married you because I loved you.””
“Then why did you write those emails?””
She didn’t answer.
I took out the papers.
“Why did you know about Lily’s trust?””
Her face changed.
And I knew.
She had no more lies left.
“I didn’t hurt your first wife.””
I froze.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
“No.””
My voice dropped.
“I wasn’t thinking that.””
But now I was.
And she saw it.
“I didn’t cause the accident.””
“Then why does Marcus say otherwise?””
“Because he wants revenge.””
“Why?””
Her silence returned.
“Vanessa.””
She sat down.
“I was there.””
The room went quiet.
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I wasn’t driving.””
“Then what were you doing there?””
She looked at the floor.
“I was meeting her.””
“Meeting who?””
“Lily’s mother.””
I felt dizzy.
“Why?””
“To talk.””
“About what?””
She looked up.
“About the trust.””
The words barely came out.
“You knew her?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I worked for the company that handled part of her family’s estate.””
I stepped back.
“You were involved before I met you.””
“Yes.””
The truth finally came out.
Not all of it.
But enough.
“You approached me because of Lily.””
“No.””
“Don’t lie.””
She whispered:
“At first.””
Those two words destroyed me.
At first.
I thought about Lily upstairs.
A little girl who trusted adults because she had no choice.
A little girl who had no idea how many people had been making decisions around her.
“Did you know she planned to leave me?””
Vanessa looked confused.
“Who?””
“Lily’s mother.””
Vanessa looked away.
And that told me something.
“You knew.””
She whispered:
“She was going to change the trust.””
My blood ran cold.
“Why?””
“Because she discovered someone was manipulating it.””
“Who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
We both turned.
Lily stood there.
Holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes were wide.
“How long have you been awake?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at Vanessa.
And whispered:
“Mommy Vanessa…”
Her voice shook.
“Were you there when my mommy died?””
Vanessa went completely still.
I looked at my daughter.
Then at my wife.
Waiting for an answer.

And after years of believing I knew the truth about that night…
I realized I might have been living inside someone else’s story.
