Chapter 4: The Video I Was Never Supposed to See

I replayed the video three times before I could accept what I was watching.

The room around me disappeared.

The sound of the coffee machine. The ticking clock. The rain tapping against the window.

None of it mattered.

Only the screen mattered.

The footage showed our living room six months earlier.

Lily was standing near the couch, holding a glass of juice.

She was smiling.

Then Vanessa walked in.

At first, nothing looked wrong.

That was the worst part.

It looked normal.

Like every other afternoon I had missed because I was stuck at work.

Vanessa bent down and said something to Lily.

The audio was low, but I could hear enough.

“Why can’t you just listen?””

Lily’s small voice answered.

“I didn’t do anything.””

Vanessa grabbed the glass from her hand.

“You always make everything harder.””

My chest tightened.

Then I saw Ethan.

He was sitting on the stairs.

Watching.

Afraid.

Vanessa pointed toward the hallway.

“Go.””

Lily shook her head.

“No, I don’t want to.””

And then Vanessa did something that made me stop breathing.

She grabbed Lily’s arm.

Not hard enough to leave a mark.

Hard enough to make a five-year-old child cry.

I stood up so quickly my chair fell backward.

“No.””

My voice sounded strange.

Like someone else was speaking.

I watched as Lily stumbled.

The glass fell.

It shattered.

Then Vanessa turned the camera away.

The footage went black for several seconds.

When it came back, Lily was on the floor crying.

Vanessa was standing over her.

And Ethan was crying too.

I covered my mouth.

I had been told my daughter was careless.

I had been told she tripped.

I had believed the woman who caused it.

The video continued.

Vanessa looked toward the camera.

Not directly at it.

But close enough.

And she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Your father doesn’t need to know everything.””

I grabbed my phone.

I needed answers.

I needed to know who had sent the video.

But before I could call anyone, a message appeared.

Unknown number.

*You finally saw it.*

My fingers went numb.

I typed back.

*Who are you?*

The reply came immediately.

*Someone who tried to tell you before.*

I stared at the screen.

*Why didn’t you?*

A pause.

Then:

*Because Vanessa made sure nobody believed me.*

I looked upstairs.

At Lily’s bedroom door.

The woman I married had built a wall between my daughter and the world.

And somehow, I had helped her build it.

A second message appeared.

*There are more videos.*

My heart sank.

*Send them.*

The typing bubble appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally:

*I will. But you need to understand something first. Ethan isn’t the only child Vanessa hurt.*

I froze.

Ethan.

The boy I thought was the favorite.

The boy I thought had everything.

Suddenly, every memory changed.

The way he avoided Vanessa’s questions.

The way he looked at Lily.

The way he apologized when nobody understood why.

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Ethan stood at the bottom of the stairs.

His face was pale.

“How much did you see?””

I lowered my phone.

“Enough.””

He looked down.

“Mom is going to know.””

“She already knows.””

His eyes widened.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Ethan, who sent me the video?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence told me everything.

“You know?””

He swallowed.

Then nodded.

“It was me.””

The room went quiet.

“You sent it?””

He nodded again.

“I didn’t know how else to make you listen.””

I looked at him.

“You could have told me.””

A painful expression crossed his face.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“After Lily got hurt.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did you say?””

“I told you Mom was lying.””

I searched my memory.

That night.

The night Lily broke her arm.

Ethan had been standing near the doorway.

He had said something.

Something I ignored.

I had been too focused on Vanessa crying.

Too focused on blaming myself.

I looked at him.

“I thought you were upset.””

“I was.””

His voice cracked.

“But I wasn’t upset because Lily fell.””

He wiped his eyes.

“I was upset because I knew why.””

I sat down.

The weight of everything hit me at once.

“Ethan… what else don’t I know?””

He looked toward the kitchen.

Then whispered:

“There’s something in Mom’s bedroom.””

“What?””

“Something she keeps hidden.””

“What kind of thing?””

His face tightened.

“Proof.””

Before I could ask another question, my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time from the unknown number.

A photo appeared.

A document.

I opened it.

And my blood turned cold.

It was a custody agreement.

May you like

With my name on it.

But the signature at the bottom wasn’t mine.
