The Plate Beside the Trash Can / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Betrayal Inside My Family

I watched the video until the screen went dark.

Then I watched it again.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

My brother’s face.

My own family.

The man who stood beside me at my wedding.

The man who held Lily after her mother died.

The man who told me, “You’re lucky you still have your daughter.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Where did you get this?””

He swallowed.

“Mom had it.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“You had this?””

She nodded.

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to protect myself.””

I shook my head.

“You knew my brother was involved.””

“I suspected.””

“Suspected?””

She stood.

“Daniel, I didn’t know everything.””

“You knew enough to let me think your story was the only one.””

“I was afraid.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice broke.

“Everyone was afraid except Lily.””

Vanessa looked down.

That was the first time she had nothing to say.

I called my brother.

He answered on the third ring.

“Daniel?””

His voice sounded normal.

That almost made it worse.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“Why?””

“Just answer.””

Another pause.

“At home.””

I looked at the video.

“Funny.””

“What?””

“I just watched you meet Lily’s mother the night she died.””

Silence.

Not confusion.

Not shock.

Silence.

And I knew.

“You were there.””

“Daniel—”

“Were you?””

His voice changed.

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

I gripped the phone.

“You listen.””

I could hear my heartbeat.

“You knew.””

“Daniel, there’s something you need to understand.””

“Everyone says that when they’re about to explain something terrible.””

He sighed.

“She was going to ruin everything.””

The words made my stomach drop.

“What?””

“Your wife.””

“You’re talking about Lily’s mother.””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Why?””

“She found out.””

“Found out what?””

My brother was quiet.

Then:

“The trust wasn’t the only thing.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“What else?””

“She had evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

He didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

“She knew what Marcus was doing.””

I frowned.

“Marcus?””

“And she knew Vanessa was involved.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“So Vanessa was right?””

A bitter laugh came through the speaker.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“The accident wasn’t about the money.””

The room went silent.

“Then what was it about?””

My brother lowered his voice.

“Your daughter.””

I stopped breathing.

“What does that mean?””

“Daniel, you need to take Lily and leave.””

My blood went cold.

“Why?””

“Because whoever started this isn’t finished.””

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

Then the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The house went dark.

Lily screamed upstairs.

I ran.

I reached her room and found her standing near the bed.

Her rabbit was on the floor.

The window was open.

Cold air rushed inside.

“Daddy.””

I grabbed her.

“What happened?””

She pointed toward the window.

“There was someone outside.””

My entire body went cold.

“Did you see who?””

She nodded.

“A man.””

“What did he look like?””

She looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“He looked like Uncle Robert.””
