Chapter 12: The Truth Buried Under the Floorboards
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
But by then, whoever had been outside was gone.
They searched the yard.
The windows.
The doors.
Nothing.
No footprints.
No broken locks.
No evidence.
Only fear.
And fear was something they couldn’t put into a report.
I sat beside Lily while an officer asked questions.
“Did you see the person clearly?””
Lily nodded.
“Yes.””
“Are you sure it was your uncle?””
She looked at me.
Then at the officer.
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
My brother had crossed every line.
But one question kept bothering me.
Why?
Why would he threaten Lily?
The next morning, I took Lily and Ethan to a hotel.
I didn’t trust the house anymore.
I didn’t trust the walls.
I didn’t trust the memories.
Vanessa came with us.
Not because I forgave her.
Because she was the only person who knew the entire story.
For once, we were on the same side.
A strange thing.
A painful thing.
A necessary thing.
We sat in the hotel room while Marcus joined us through a video call.
“I told you this would happen,” he said.
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
“I knew Robert was desperate.””
“Robert?””
Marcus nodded.
“Your brother.””
I felt anger rise.
“Why?””
“Because he thought Lily’s trust should belong to him.””
My jaw tightened.
“How?””
“Your parents left him out of their estate planning.””
I froze.
“What?””
Marcus continued.
“He believed your daughter’s inheritance should have been part of the family wealth.””
“That’s insane.””
“Yes.””
He looked serious.
“And dangerous.””
Vanessa spoke quietly.
“Robert wasn’t working alone.””
I looked at her.
“Who else?””
She hesitated.
Then:
“My father.””
I stared.
“What?””
“My father introduced Robert to Marcus.””
Everything stopped.
“You knew?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I found out later.””
I stood.
“How many people were involved?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus said:
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“The accident report.””
“What about it?””
“It was changed.””
My stomach dropped.
“Changed by who?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Your brother.””
I felt like the ground disappeared.
All these years.
All this pain.
All this guilt.
And someone had rewritten the truth.
“Where is the original report?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She nodded.
“I know where.””
I turned.
“Where?””
She looked at me.
“Your old house.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The house where Lily’s mother died.””
I felt cold.
“That house was demolished.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Because before it was destroyed, someone hid something underneath the floor.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“The original evidence.””
I stared at her.
“You’re telling me the truth has been sitting there for years?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you get it?””
Her eyes filled with shame.
“Because I was afraid of what it would reveal.””
I grabbed my keys.
“We’re going.””
Marcus looked alarmed.
“Daniel, wait.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I spent years believing a lie.””
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“My daughter spent years suffering because adults cared more about secrets than protecting her.””
I opened the door.
“I’m done waiting.””
Hours later, we stood outside the abandoned property.
The old house was almost gone.
Broken windows.
Overgrown grass.
A place where memories had turned into ghosts.
Vanessa pointed toward the old foundation.
“Under there.””
I walked forward.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
One final warning.
*If you dig there, you’ll discover why Lily’s mother really died.*
I looked at the ruined house.

Then at my daughter standing safely behind me.
And I picked up the shovel.
