Chapter 6: The Truth Lily Was Hiding
The video played.
Lily sat at the kitchen table.
The camera angle showed only part of the room.
Vanessa’s voice came from behind the camera.
“Tell me again what happened.””
Lily looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“You do know.””
“I don’t.””
Vanessa sighed.
“You’re making this difficult.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
She didn’t answer.
The video continued.
“Lily,” Vanessa said, “did Daddy tell you to say these things?””
My heart stopped.
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
The video ended.
Vanessa looked at me.
“There.””
I stared at her.
“That proves nothing.””
“It proves she lies.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“It proves you were questioning a five-year-old until she gave the answer you wanted.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“You always choose her.””
The words hung in the air.
Not “you always protect her.””
Not “you always believe her.””
You always choose her.
Like my daughter was an enemy.
Like love was a competition.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Mom, stop.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You too?””
“Yes.””
She stared at him.
“You’re choosing them?””
Ethan’s face tightened.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
Something changed in her expression.
A flash of anger.
Then it disappeared.
She picked up her phone.
“You both have no idea what you’re doing.””
I stepped toward her.
“Actually, I do.””
“No, Daniel.””
She shook her head.
“You’re reacting emotionally.””
I almost laughed.
After everything.
After the food.
The room.
The videos.
She was still saying I was emotional.
“I’m calling the police.””
Her face went still.
Then she smiled.
“Go ahead.””
That surprised me.
“You’re not scared?””
“No.””
“Why?””
She walked toward the dresser.
Picked up another folder.
And placed it in my hands.
“Because I was prepared.””
Inside were printed messages.
Between me and Vanessa.
Some were real.
Some were edited.
Some were taken completely out of context.
But all of them made me look angry.
Absent.
Unstable.
“She was building a case,” Ethan whispered.
Vanessa looked at him.
“I was protecting myself.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You were planning this.””
She looked at him coldly.
“You don’t know anything.””
Then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Her expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
She answered.
“Hello?””
A pause.
Then:
“No. That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
I watched her carefully.
Her voice lowered.
“I need more time.””
Another pause.
Then she hung up.
“Who was that?”” I asked.
“No one.””
“Who?””
She ignored me.
But Ethan answered.
“It was him.””
I turned.
“Him?””
Ethan looked terrified.
“The man who helped Mom.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“Ethan, don’t.””
I stepped closer.
“Who helped you?””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
Another message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Ask Vanessa why she married you.*
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She said nothing.
The silence was enough.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes moved toward the floor.
For the first time since I came home, she looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
I opened the message again.
Another one arrived.
*She didn’t marry you because she loved Lily.*
My heart sank.
May you like
Then the final message appeared.
*She married you because of what your daughter inherited.*
