Chapter 13: What Was Hidden Beneath the House
The shovel struck the ground with a sound that felt louder than it should have.
For years, this place had been nothing but a memory.
The house where Lily’s mother took her last breath.
The house where I said goodbye to the woman I thought I would grow old with.
The house where I had buried my grief and moved forward.
But now I stood there realizing I had never known the whole story.
Vanessa stood beside me.
For once, she wasn’t trying to control the situation.
She looked terrified.
“Are you sure about this?”” she asked.
I didn’t stop digging.
“No.””
The answer surprised her.
“I’m not sure about anything anymore.””
The dirt piled around my feet.
Marcus watched from a distance, speaking quietly with the police officer who had agreed to come with us after seeing the documents.
Ethan stayed near the car with Lily.
I had wanted them away from this.
Away from the ugly parts of the past.
But I also knew something.
Secrets had protected the wrong people for too long.
After nearly an hour, the shovel hit something hard.
I froze.
“What is it?”” Vanessa asked.
I moved the dirt away carefully.
A metal box appeared.
Old.
Rusty.
Hidden beneath the remains of the foundation.
The officer stepped forward.
“Don’t open it yet.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because whatever is inside could be evidence.””
Evidence.
That word felt impossible.
After all these years, the truth was sitting underground.
Waiting.
The box was taken to the station.
Two hours later, we sat in a small interview room.
The metal container sat on the table between us.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, the officer opened it.
Inside were documents.
A flash drive.
Photos.
And a handwritten letter.
My hands shook when I saw the name on the envelope.
*Daniel.*
I knew the handwriting immediately.
My wife’s.
Lily’s mother.
I couldn’t breathe.
“Read it,” the officer said softly.
I opened it.
My eyes moved across the first line.
*Daniel, if you’re reading this, something happened and I wasn’t able to explain everything myself.*
I had to stop.
The room blurred.
I continued.
*First, I need you to know something. I never doubted you as Lily’s father. Not once.*
My throat tightened.
*But I discovered someone was trying to gain control over Lily’s trust.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She lowered her eyes.
*At first, I thought it was only a financial attack. Then I discovered they were building a story that you were unstable. That you were incapable of protecting Lily.*
My hands clenched.
The trust condition.
It finally made sense.
*They planned to remove you from control of your daughter’s future.*
I kept reading.
Then I reached the sentence that changed everything.
*The person helping them was someone we both trusted.*
I looked at the officer.
“Keep going,” Marcus whispered.
The next line made my blood run cold.
*Daniel, I need you to know Robert was not acting alone.*
I looked up.
My brother’s name.
Again.
But then came the part nobody expected.
*The person who first approached me was Vanessa.*
The room went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
“I told you,” she whispered.
I kept reading.
*But Vanessa did not approach me to hurt Lily. She approached me because she discovered what Robert and Marcus were planning.*
I stopped.
Everyone stared.
The story was changing again.
*She made mistakes. She was scared. She hid things from Daniel because she believed exposing everything would put Lily in more danger.*
My eyes moved faster.
*But the most dangerous person is not Vanessa. It is Robert. He believes Lily’s inheritance belongs to him, and he will destroy anyone who stands in his way.*
I looked at Vanessa.
The woman who had hurt my daughter.
The woman who had hidden the truth.
The woman who had also been hiding from something bigger.
I didn’t know how to feel.
Then I saw the final paragraph.
**Daniel, if you are reading this, protect Lily. Not the money. Not the inheritance.
Her. She is the only thing that matters.**
The letter slipped from my hand.
For years, I had been fighting for answers.
But suddenly, I understood.
The money was never the center of this.
Lily was.
The officer picked up the flash drive.
“We need to examine everything.””
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at me.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice spoke.
My brother.
“Daniel.””
I stood.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“Closer than you think.””
My blood turned cold.
“What do you want?””
His voice was calm.
“I want to fix this.””
“You threatened my daughter.””
“No.””
He sighed.
“You still don’t understand.””
Then he said something that made my heart stop.
“Ask Vanessa who was really driving that night.””
The call ended.
I slowly turned toward her.
May you like
And Vanessa’s face told me one thing.
She knew.
