Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
I stared at the document until the words stopped making sense.
My name.
My address.
My daughter’s name.
Everything looked official.
Except one thing.
The signature.
It was supposed to be mine.
But it wasn’t.
“What is that?”” Ethan asked.
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
Because suddenly, the situation was bigger than cruel punishments and hidden food.
This was planned.
Someone had been preparing something.
Something involving my daughter.
I took a screenshot and sent it to myself.
Then I looked at Ethan.
“Where is your mother?””
His face changed.
“She went out.””
“When?””
“Five minutes ago.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“Where did she go?””
Ethan hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
Then he added quietly:
“But I know where she keeps things.””
I followed him upstairs.
Every step felt heavier.
Vanessa’s bedroom door was closed.
Ethan stood there, shaking.
“She told me never to open this.””
“Why?””
“Because she said some things were private.””
I looked at the lock.
It wasn’t locked.
I opened the door.
The room smelled like Vanessa’s perfume.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
A neatly made bed.
Clothes folded perfectly.
A jewelry box on the dresser.
Nothing about the room matched the chaos happening downstairs.
“Where?””
Ethan walked to the closet.
He moved aside several dresses.
Behind them was a small black box.
My heart sank.
“What is that?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
I opened it.
Inside were papers.
Printed emails.
Photos.
And a notebook.
I picked up the first paper.
It was a list.
Dates.
Times.
Notes.
At first, I didn’t understand.
Then I saw Lily’s name.
*Monday — cried for 20 minutes. Must become less dependent.*
My hands shook.
Another page.
*Tuesday — refused vegetables. Removed dessert.*
Another.
*Friday — Daniel called. Acted normal.*
I dropped the paper.
“She was documenting this?””
Ethan nodded.
“She liked having records.””
“Records of what?””
He looked at me.
“Of how she was raising us.””
I turned the pages faster.
Then I found something that made me stop.
A note written in Vanessa’s handwriting.
*If Daniel ever questions my parenting, these records prove he is unstable and emotional.*
My stomach twisted.
“She was preparing to use this against me.””
Ethan whispered:
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He sat on the edge of the bed.
“Because she told me you would leave us.””
“What?””
“She said if you knew the truth, you’d take Lily away.””
I stared at him.
“And you believed her?””
He shook his head.
“Not anymore.””
A sound came from behind us.
The bedroom door closed.
Slowly.
We turned.
Vanessa stood there.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t angry.
She looked calm.
Too calm.
“You really should have listened when I told you to stop digging.””
Ethan stood immediately.
“Mom—”
“Go downstairs.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at him.
And the fear returned to his face.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Ethan.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“I’m done being scared of you.””
For a moment, Vanessa looked surprised.
Then she smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“Daniel, do you know what happens when children are coached?””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“They say things they don’t understand.””
I held up the notebook.
“Did you write this?””
She glanced at it.
Then shrugged.
“Yes.””
The casual answer shocked me.
“You admit it?””
“Of course.””
“Why?””
She walked into the room.
“Because someone had to control this family.””
I felt disgust rising in my throat.
“Control?””
“Yes.””
She looked toward the hallway.
“At first, I thought I could make Lily understand boundaries.””
“She’s five.””
“She was becoming spoiled.””
“You locked her in a room.””
Her expression barely changed.
“She needed consequences.””
I stepped forward.
“No.””
My voice was steady.
“She needed a parent.””
For the first time, Vanessa’s mask slipped.
“You think you’re better than me?””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I think I should have protected my daughter.””
A long silence followed.
Then Vanessa laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
She reached into her pocket.
Pulled out her phone.
And placed it on the bed.
“You’re worried about what I did to Lily.””
She looked directly at me.
“But you have no idea what Lily did.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa unlocked the phone.
Opened a video.
Then turned the screen toward me.
And the first thing I heard was Lily’s voice.
May you like
But it wasn’t crying.
It was saying something I never expected.
