Chapter 8: The Video In The Dark

The entire room stopped breathing.

On the giant screen above the stage was a man sitting in a dark room.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakably Michael.

My son.

I grabbed Victor’s arm.

“That’s him.””

My voice broke.

“That’s my baby.””

The recording continued.

Michael looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this…”

He paused.

“Something happened to me.””

The room became silent.

Even Richard stopped smiling.

Michael continued.

“I need whoever finds this to understand one thing.””

He leaned closer.

“The person who betrayed me was someone I loved.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Ethan stared at her.

The video changed slightly.

Michael was sitting at a table.

There were papers beside him.

Documents.

Photos.

Names.

“I spent months investigating missing money from the family company.””

Victor whispered:

“The records.””

Michael nodded in the video.

“I found transfers hidden under fake accounts.””

The screen showed documents.

Names blurred.

Dates.

Numbers.

My stomach tightened.

Michael continued.

“The person responsible wasn’t a stranger.””

He looked down.

“It was someone inside the family.””

Everyone looked toward Claire.

She shook her head.

“No.””

Michael’s voice continued.

“I wanted to believe I was wrong.””

He took a breath.

“But then I found proof.””

The video paused.

A new image appeared.

A photograph.

My heart stopped.

Because it showed Claire.

Standing beside Richard.

Years earlier.

The room exploded with whispers.

Ethan stepped away from his mother.

“You knew him?””

Claire looked desperate.

“I can explain.””

Nobody listened.

Michael’s recording continued.

“Claire was not working alone.””

Richard’s face hardened.

The screen showed another document.

A signature.

Victor moved closer.

“Who signed that?””

I looked.

I couldn’t believe it.

Because the signature belonged to someone I knew.

Someone who had attended Michael’s funeral.

Someone who had comforted me.

My own brother.

Thomas.

My hands shook.

“No.””

Victor looked at me.

“Who is that?””

“My brother.””

The video continued.

“They wanted control.””

Michael’s voice became softer.

“They wanted everything my father built.””

The screen went black for a second.

Then Michael appeared again.

This time he looked terrified.

“Mom, if you’re watching this, I need you to know…”

He paused.

“I never left you.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I know.””

I whispered.

“I know.””

The recording ended.

The lights came back on.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan turned toward Claire.

“Is it true?””

Claire looked at him.

“Ethan…”

“Did you know he was alive?””

Her silence answered.

Ethan’s face collapsed.

“How could you?””

Claire started crying.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From my father?””

“No.””

“From the truth?””

She had no answer.

Richard suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

“You’re all so emotional.””

Victor turned.

“You think this is funny?””

Richard shrugged.

“Michael always had a weakness.””

“What?””

“He believed people could change.””

Richard looked at me.

“He believed his mother would forgive everyone.””

I stepped forward.

“You don’t know me.””

Richard smiled.

“I know exactly who you are.””

He walked closer.

“You’re the woman who took in a homeless boy.””

He looked at Victor.

“You’re the woman who gave him hope.””

Then he looked back at me.

“And that’s why Michael made his biggest mistake.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What mistake?””

Richard leaned closer.

“He trusted you with the final piece.””

Victor immediately reacted.

“What piece?””

Richard smiled.

“The one that proves everything.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Victor.

“What is he talking about?””

Richard reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small photograph.

My breath caught.

Because it was a picture of Michael.

But this time…

He wasn’t alone.

He was standing beside a young woman.

And in her arms was a baby.

Richard looked at me.

May you like

“Did Michael ever tell you he had another child?””

My entire world stopped.
