Chapter 12: The Daughter Michael Hid

The front door opened before anyone reached it.

A woman walked inside.

She looked around thirty.

Dark hair.

Tired eyes.

A small scar near her cheek.

She wasn’t afraid.

She looked determined.

Victor immediately recognized her.

His face changed.

“Anna.””

The woman froze.

“You know me?””

Nobody answered.

Because I already knew.

The photograph.

The baby.

The secret Michael had protected.

This was her.

The mother of my granddaughter.

Anna looked at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Mrs. Collins?””

I couldn’t speak.

I just nodded.

She covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

She stepped closer.

“I’ve wanted to meet you for so long.””

My voice trembled.

“Where is Lily?””

The question came out before anything else.

Anna looked down.

“She’s safe.””

I closed my eyes.

A wave of relief hit me.

“She’s alive?””

Anna nodded.

“Yes.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“My son’s daughter…”

Anna cried softly.

“Yes.””

Victor looked between them.

“What happened?””

Anna’s expression changed.

“Michael never told you?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She looked at Claire.

Then Richard.

Then back at us.

“Because he was trying to keep you alive.””

The room became silent.

Anna reached into her bag.

She pulled out another photograph.

This one was newer.

A teenage girl.

Smiling.

Holding a book.

“This is Lily.””

I touched the picture.

“She looks like him.””

Anna smiled sadly.

“She has his heart too.””

Ethan stared.

“I have a sister?””

Anna looked at him.

“Half-sister.””

His eyes filled with shock.

“I never knew.””

“Neither did she.””

I looked up.

“What do you mean?””

Anna sat down.

“Michael made a choice.””

Her voice became quiet.

“He wanted Lily to grow up without fear.””

Victor frowned.

“Fear from who?””

Anna looked toward Richard.

Everyone followed her gaze.

Richard’s face became cold.

“You should leave.””

Anna ignored him.

“Michael discovered everything.””

She looked at me.

“He found out Richard wasn’t just stealing money.””

Victor stepped forward.

“What else?””

Anna swallowed.

“He was building a network of people who controlled information.””

The room went quiet.

Richard laughed.

“Careful.””

Anna looked at him.

“I’m done being careful.””

She pulled out a small recorder.

“Michael gave me this before he disappeared.””

My heart raced.

“What’s on it?””

Anna looked at me.

“His final message.””

Victor stepped closer.

“Play it.””

She pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Michael’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But clear.

“If you’re hearing this…”

A tear fell from my eye.

“Mom, I’m sorry.””

The recording continued.

“I need you to know the truth.””

A pause.

Then Michael said the words that changed everything.

“The person who betrayed me wasn’t Richard.””

Everyone froze.

Victor looked confused.

“Then who?””

Michael’s voice continued.

“It was someone I trusted more than anyone.””

The recording stopped.

Anna looked at me.

“I think you need to hear the rest.””

She pressed another button.

A second recording began.

And this time…

Michael said a name.

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because the person he accused…

Was standing right beside me.
