Chapter 6: The Recording Michael Left Behind
Every person in the room turned toward Claire.
She looked like someone who had just watched a locked door suddenly open.
“No,” she whispered.
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“You know where it is.””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know anything.””
Richard laughed.
“That’s always been your favorite answer.””
Ethan looked devastated.
“Mom…”
Claire looked at him.
“Don’t listen to them.””
But her voice was different now.
Desperate.
Not confident.
I watched her carefully.
For years, I had ignored small things.
The way she changed subjects when I mentioned Michael.
The way she avoided old family photos.
The way she never wanted Ethan asking questions about his grandfather.
Suddenly, every strange moment had a shadow behind it.
“Where is the recording?”” I asked.
Claire looked at me.
“Margaret, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Victor stepped forward.
“Enough.””
His voice was calm.
But everyone felt the anger behind it.
“Michael trusted people who failed him.””
He pointed toward Claire.
“And he trusted people who betrayed him.””
Richard looked at Victor.
“You’re still acting like a hero.””
Victor turned.
“I’m acting like the man Michael believed I could become.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Ethan walked toward his mother.
“Is it true?””
Claire looked away.
“Ethan…”
“Is it true?””
His voice cracked.
“Did you know what happened to Grandpa?””
She closed her eyes.
That was her answer.
Ethan stepped back.
The boy who had ignored me the day before suddenly looked lost.
“I thought you said he abandoned us.””
Claire whispered:
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
She didn’t answer.
The silence destroyed her explanation.
Victor looked at Richard.
“Where is the recording?””
Richard pulled the envelope from his coat.
“I don’t have it.””
Everyone stared.
“What?””
Richard smiled slightly.
“Michael was smarter than people thought.””
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a small key.
“A storage key.””
My heart raced.
“What does it open?””
Richard looked at me.
“A safety deposit box.””
Victor immediately understood.
“Where?””
Richard looked toward Claire.
“Only one person knows.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Victor stepped forward.
“Claire.””
Her face changed.
“Stop.””
“You have the key.””
Everyone froze.
I looked at Victor.
“How do you know?””
He pointed at the necklace.
“Because Michael told me once.””
Victor’s voice became quiet.
“He said if anything happened to him, the person holding that symbol would have access to everything.””
Claire’s hand flew to the necklace.
“No.””
Victor looked at her.
“Take it off.””
She backed away.
“No.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Mom, what is happening?””
Richard spoke.
“That necklace isn’t jewelry.””
He smiled coldly.
“It’s a key.””
The room erupted.
People started moving closer.
Security guards looked uncertain.
Claire suddenly grabbed her purse.
“I need to leave.””
Victor blocked her path.
“No.””
She stared at him.
“You can’t stop me.””
Victor didn’t move.
“I’m not the person stopping you.””
He looked at me.
“She is.””
I didn’t understand.
Then I saw it.
A small piece of paper falling from Claire’s purse.
It landed near my feet.
I picked it up.
The handwriting was familiar.
Michael’s.
But the date was impossible.
Because it was written three days after the night everyone told me he disappeared.
My hands started shaking.
Victor leaned closer.
“What does it say?””
I unfolded the paper.
Only one sentence was written.
My eyes filled with tears.
Because after twelve years of believing my son was gone…
Michael’s words were staring back at me.
“Mom, if you are reading this, I’m still alive.””
I looked up.
Nobody in the room moved.
Then my phone started ringing.
The number on the screen was unknown.
I answered with trembling hands.
A voice came through.
An old voice.
A voice I knew better than anyone.
“Mom?””
I dropped my walker handle.
May you like
Because after twelve years…
My son had finally called me.
