Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew The Truth

Nobody moved.

The stranger stood near the entrance of the hall like he owned the place.

People around him continued whispering, unaware that they were standing in the middle of something that had been hidden for more than a decade.

Victor’s fists tightened.

I had never seen him look afraid before.

Angry?

Yes.

Protective?

Always.

But afraid?

Never.

“Richard,” Victor said.

The name fell like a stone.

Ethan looked between them.

“Who is Richard?””

Nobody answered.

The man smiled.

A slow, confident smile.

“The same person your grandmother’s family forgot.””

I felt my stomach twist.

I had spent years blaming myself.

Maybe I should have called Michael more.

Maybe I should have noticed something.

Maybe I should have fought harder.

But seeing Richard standing there…

I realized there had always been something missing.

A piece of the story nobody wanted me to know.

Victor moved in front of me.

“Stay behind me.””

I shook my head.

“I’m tired of standing behind people.””

He looked back.

I held his gaze.

“I spent twelve years wondering why my son disappeared.””

My voice grew stronger.

“I’m done being afraid of the answer.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You always were stubborn, Margaret.””

I froze.

“You know me?””

“Of course.””

He stepped closer.

“Michael talked about you constantly.””

My heart hurt.

“He loved you.””

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

Not with kindness.

With control.

Claire walked toward Richard.

“Why are you here?””

Everyone turned.

The question sounded too familiar.

Too comfortable.

Victor noticed.

“You two know each other.””

Claire’s face tightened.

“That’s not what this is.””

Richard looked at her.

“You never were good at lying under pressure.””

My grandson Ethan stared at his mother.

“Mom?””

She looked terrified.

“Ethan, go outside.””

“No.””

His voice was louder than anyone expected.

“No, I want to know what’s happening.””

Richard smiled.

“Your son deserves the truth.””

Claire looked at him sharply.

“Don’t.””

Richard ignored her.

“Your father found out too much.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Richard looked at me.

“Michael discovered financial records that connected certain people in his family to illegal deals.””

The room went silent.

“He planned to expose everything.””

My hands shook.

“No.””

Victor nodded slowly.

“That’s why he was scared.””

Richard continued.

“And that’s why he disappeared.””

Ethan stared at him.

“You’re saying my grandfather was killed?””

Richard didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.

For twelve years, I had told myself Michael left.

That maybe something happened.

That maybe one day he would walk through my door.

But deep down…

I knew.

A mother always knows.

Victor gently touched my shoulder.

“Margaret…”

I looked at Richard.

“Where is my son?””

Richard’s face remained emotionless.

“That’s the question you should have asked years ago.””

Anger replaced my sadness.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“You knew what happened to him?””

“Yes.””

The entire room gasped.

I stepped forward.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Richard looked at Claire.

Then back at me.

“Because some people were willing to pay a lot of money to keep that secret buried.””

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent now.””

Ethan looked at his mother.

“What is he talking about?””

Claire’s eyes filled with panic.

“Ethan, please.””

But Ethan stepped away from her.

For the first time, I saw him look at his mother differently.

Like he was seeing a stranger.

Victor turned to Richard.

“You knew Michael was trying to protect Margaret.””

“Yes.””

“And you let him disappear.””

Richard’s smile faded.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

Victor stepped closer.

“Then tell it.””

Richard looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on me.

“Your son wasn’t running away from danger.””

He paused.

“He was running toward it.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Richard reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

It was the same kind of envelope Michael always used.

He held it up.

“This belonged to Michael.””

Victor stared.

“How did you get that?””

Richard smiled.

“Because he wanted me to have it.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard said:

“But he also left something behind.””

He looked directly at me.

“Something he wanted his mother to find.””

My voice trembled.

“What?””

Richard walked closer.

“A hidden recording.””

The room went completely silent.

“A recording Michael made the night he disappeared.””

I felt my knees weaken.

Victor grabbed my arm.

“Where is it?””

Richard looked toward Claire.

May you like

And smiled.

“Ask her.””
