Chapter 4: The Necklace From The Past
The entire ceremony hall went silent.
Victor’s words hung in the air like a storm nobody knew how to escape.
My daughter-in-law, Claire, immediately stepped backward.
For years, I had known her as a woman who always appeared calm and polished.
Perfect hair.
Perfect smile.
Perfect manners whenever other people were watching.
But now I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Her fingers closed around the necklace hanging from her neck.
“What are you talking about?”” Claire asked.
Her voice was sharper than usual.
Victor didn’t answer right away.
He stared at the necklace as if he was looking at a memory he had spent decades trying to bury.
The symbol carved into the silver pendant was small.
Most people would never notice it.
But Victor did.
Because he had seen it before.
“Where did you get that?”” he asked again.
Claire forced a laugh.
“This?””
She touched the pendant.
“It was a gift.””
“From who?””
Her smile disappeared.
“Why does that matter?””
Victor stepped forward.
“Because that symbol belonged to a man named Richard Collins.””
My breath caught.
The name struck something inside me.
Richard.
Michael’s older cousin.
The man who had been around our family before everything changed.
I hadn’t heard that name in years.
I looked at Victor.
“How do you know that name?””
Victor turned toward me.
“Because he was the last person I saw with Michael.””
The room erupted with whispers.
Ethan looked confused.
“Wait… what are you saying?””
Victor looked at him.
“I’m saying your grandmother has been carrying unanswered questions for twelve years.””
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No. This is ridiculous.””
She looked around the room.
“Everyone, please ignore this. These men don’t know what they’re talking about.””
But Victor’s eyes never left her.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
My hands tightened around my walker.
“Victor…”
He looked at me gently.
“Margaret, I didn’t tell you everything last night.””
My heart sank.
“What else is there?””
He reached inside his jacket.
Then he pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
The paper was old.
Yellowed.
Almost falling apart.
“I kept this because I didn’t know where else to put it.””
He handed it to me.
I opened it slowly.
The handwriting made my entire body freeze.
I knew that handwriting.
Michael’s.
My son.
My hands began shaking.
“Where did you get this?””
Victor swallowed.
“Michael gave it to me the night before he disappeared.””
The room seemed to spin.
“You saw him?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Victor lowered his eyes.
“Because I was nineteen years old. I was scared. And by the time I understood what happened…”
He paused.
“It was too late.””
I looked at the paper.
Three words were written at the top.
“Protect Mom.””
My vision blurred.
I forced myself to read the rest.
Mom,
If anything happens to me, please don’t trust everyone around you.
There is something wrong.
Someone close to us is hiding the truth.
I’m sorry.
I love you.
Michael.
A sound escaped my throat.
A broken, painful sound I couldn’t control.
“He knew,” I whispered.
Victor nodded.
“He knew someone was coming after him.””
Claire suddenly stepped forward.
“That proves nothing.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at the paper.
“You’re trusting an old note from years ago?””
Victor’s expression hardened.
“No.””
He looked at the necklace.
“I’m trusting what I saw.””
Claire’s face became pale.
“What did you see?””
Victor was silent.
Then he said:
“The night Michael disappeared, I saw him arguing with a man outside the Collins family house.””
My breathing stopped.
“Who?””
Victor looked directly at Claire.
“The man wearing that symbol.””
The room exploded.
Ethan turned toward his mother.
“Mom?””
Claire shook her head quickly.
“No. Absolutely not.””
She looked at me.
“Margaret, you cannot believe this.””
For years, I had wanted answers.
I had begged.
I had called.
I had searched through old documents.
But nobody ever told me anything.
Now, standing in that ceremony hall, the truth felt close enough to touch.
I looked at Claire.
The woman who had slowly pushed me out of my grandson’s life.
The woman who always acted like I was a burden.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”” I asked.
Her face changed.
“What?””
“About Richard.””
She looked away.
That tiny movement told me more than any words could.
Victor noticed too.
He leaned toward me.
“Margaret…”
His voice became serious.
“We need to leave.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He glanced toward the entrance.
A man was standing there.
Watching us.
He was older.
Well-dressed.
Cold expression.
And around his neck…
Was the same symbol.
The man slowly smiled.
Then he said:
“Victor.””
Everyone turned.
“I was wondering when you would finally come back.””
Victor’s entire body went still.
Because he recognized him.
May you like
And the next words out of that man’s mouth changed everything.
“Still trying to solve what happened to Michael Collins?””
