Chapter 11: The Box Under The Floor

The drive to Claire’s house felt endless.

Nobody talked.

Not because we had nothing to say.

Because there were too many things we didn’t understand.

I sat in the back seat with Victor.

The city passed outside the window.

People walked.

Cars moved.

Life continued.

But mine had stopped twelve years ago.

And now it was moving too fast.

Victor finally spoke.

“I need to tell you something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared forward.

“Michael asked me to watch over you.””

My chest tightened.

“You mean before he disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

His eyes lowered.

“Because I failed.””

I didn’t expect that answer.

Victor continued.

“I was supposed to meet him that night.””

“What happened?””

“He never arrived.””

I waited.

“He called me once.””

My breath caught.

“What did he say?””

Victor looked at his hands.

“He said, ‘If I don’t make it back, protect my mother.’”

Tears filled my eyes.

“He knew.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because he told me not to.””

I looked away.

For twelve years, I had been angry at everyone.

But maybe everyone had been carrying pieces of a secret.

When we arrived at the house, Ethan was already there.

He looked nervous.

“I never thought this would happen.””

I touched his shoulder.

“Neither did I.””

Claire stood near the doorway.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Not powerful.

Not cruel.

Just broken.

Victor noticed.

“Where is the box?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she walked upstairs.

Everyone followed.

She stopped in the master bedroom.

Then she moved toward an old wooden cabinet.

“I found it after Michael disappeared.””

She opened a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small metal box.

My heart raced.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of Richard?””

She nodded.

“And someone else.””

Victor looked at her.

“Who?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She placed the box on the bed.

There was a lock.

But no key.

Ethan frowned.

“How do we open it?””

Victor examined it.

Then he noticed something.

A small symbol engraved into the metal.

The same symbol from the necklace.

He looked at Claire.

“The necklace.””

She slowly removed it.

Her hands were shaking.

The pendant fit perfectly into the lock.

Click.

The box opened.

Inside were documents.

A flash drive.

And one photograph.

I picked up the photograph first.

My hands froze.

It was Michael.

But he wasn’t alone.

Standing beside him was Anna.

And next to them…

Was a little girl.

Older now.

Maybe twelve years old.

On the back of the picture were four words.

“My daughter, Lily.””

I stopped breathing.

“My granddaughter.””

Nobody spoke.

Victor looked at the flash drive.

“We need to see what’s on this.””

He connected it to Ethan’s laptop.

A video file appeared.

Created date:

Three days after Michael disappeared.

My heart pounded.

Victor pressed play.

Michael appeared.

Alive.

Looking directly into the camera.

“Mom.””

I covered my mouth.

“If you’re seeing this, it means I wasn’t able to come home.””

His eyes were tired.

But he smiled.

“I’m sorry you had to learn the truth this way.””

The video continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

Michael looked directly at the camera.

“I didn’t leave you.””

Tears rolled down my face.

“I was taken away.””

The room went silent.

Victor leaned closer.

Michael continued.

“And the person who helped them…”

He paused.

My heart stopped.

“The person who betrayed me…”

The video froze.

The screen went black.

Everyone stared.

“What happened?”” Ethan asked.

Victor checked the laptop.

“The file is damaged.””

“No.””

I touched the screen.

“No.””

Then a notification appeared.

A new message.

The file had been remotely accessed.

Someone was deleting it.

Victor immediately grabbed his phone.

“Someone knows we found this.””

Claire whispered:

“No.””

We looked at her.

She was staring at the window.

Her face had gone completely pale.

Because outside the house…

A black SUV had just stopped.

May you like

And the person stepping out…

Was someone I never expected to see.
