Chapter 7: The Voice I Never Forgot
For twelve years, I had imagined what I would say if I ever heard my son’s voice again.
I imagined screaming.
Crying.
Asking a thousand questions.
But when Michael said my name through that phone…
I couldn’t say anything.
My hand covered my mouth.
My knees weakened.
The world around me disappeared.
“Mom?””
That single word broke me.
I pressed the phone against my ear with both hands.
“Michael?””
My voice barely came out.
“Yes.””
A sob escaped my throat.
“No…”
I looked around the room.
Everyone was staring at me.
Victor had tears in his eyes.
Ethan looked frozen.
Claire looked like she had seen a ghost.
“Where are you?”” I whispered.
There was silence on the other end.
Then Michael answered.
“Somewhere I should have left a long time ago.””
My heart tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“Mom, listen to me carefully.””
His voice sounded older.
Tired.
But it was him.
“I don’t have much time.””
Victor stepped closer.
He mouthed, “Put it on speaker.””
I nodded.
I pressed the button.
Michael’s voice filled the room.
“Mom?””
“I’m here.””
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words hurt more than anything.
“Why are you apologizing?””
“Because I should have come home.””
I closed my eyes.
“You were my son. You never needed permission to come home.””
A long silence followed.
Then Michael said:
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“But I couldn’t.””
Everyone listened.
Even Richard.
Even Claire.
“Who did this?”” Victor asked.
Michael went quiet.
Then he said:
“Victor?””
Victor stepped closer.
“It’s me.””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“I knew you’d find her.””
Victor wiped his eyes.
“I spent years trying.””
“I know.””
The words surprised us.
Michael continued.
“I watched from a distance.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I saw you, Mom.””
My hands trembled.
“Then why didn’t you come to me?””
“Because they were watching.””
Victor’s face changed.
“Who?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Everyone you think you can trust.””
The room became colder.
My eyes moved toward Claire.
She looked away.
Michael continued.
“Mom, I need you to leave that building.””
Victor immediately reacted.
“Why?””
“Because Richard is there.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“I’m right here.””
Michael went silent.
Then his voice changed.
“You’re with him?””
Nobody answered.
Richard stepped forward.
“Your little plan failed, Michael.””
The phone went quiet.
Then Michael said:
“I knew it would.””
Everyone looked confused.
Victor frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Michael continued.
“The recording wasn’t the only thing I left behind.””
My breathing stopped.
“What else?””
“A trail.””
He paused.
“I knew someone would eventually find Mom.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“You set this up?””
“Yes.””
Michael’s voice became stronger.
“I knew Victor would come back.””
Victor looked shocked.
“Why?””
“Because he was the only person I trusted.””
The room went silent.
Victor looked down.
After all those years, he finally understood.
Michael hadn’t forgotten him.
He had been counting on him.
Then Michael said something that changed everything.
“Mom, there’s something you need to know about Ethan.””
My grandson looked up.
“What about me?””
Michael hesitated.
“Ethan was never supposed to grow up believing I abandoned him.””
Claire stepped backward.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at her.
Michael heard her.
“You’re there.””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire,” Michael said.
Her face turned pale.
“I’m sorry.””
Michael’s voice became quiet.
“But the truth is coming out.””
Suddenly, the phone connection became weak.
“Michael?””
Static filled the room.
“Mom…”
“Michael!””
“I left something for you…”
The call cut.
I stared at the phone.
“No.””
Victor grabbed my shoulder.
“He’s alive.””
I looked at him.
“But where?””
Before he could answer, Richard suddenly moved.
He grabbed something from his pocket.
A small device.
Victor reacted instantly.
“What is that?””
Richard smiled.
“A reminder.””
He pressed a button.
The hall doors locked.
Everyone gasped.
Richard looked at me.
“Your son always underestimated one thing.””
I stepped back.
“What?””
He smiled.
“He thought the truth could save people.””
The lights flickered.
Then the screen above the ceremony stage turned on.
A video appeared.
