The Night They Hit My Son / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Visitor at Midnight

The first thing I did was turn off the lights.

The second thing I did was reach for Noah.

Claire looked at me.

“What’s happening?””

I held up a finger.

Quiet.

Every instinct I had built over years of protecting my company suddenly shifted toward protecting my family.

The house felt different.

A place that had always been safe now felt like a trap.

Marcus was still on the phone.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“I’m listening.””

“Stay away from the doors.””

“Who is inside?””

A pause.

“We’re not sure.””

That answer made my stomach tighten.

Marcus was never uncertain.

Not about anything.

I moved toward the stairs.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“My son is upstairs.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“I know.””

A sound came from downstairs.

A floorboard.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone wasn’t trying to hide.

They wanted us to know they were there.

I whispered:

“Claire, take Noah and lock yourselves in the panic room.””

She looked terrified.

“What about you?””

“I’ll handle it.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Daniel, you always say you can handle everything.””

I looked at her.

“But you can’t fight someone who already knows where to hurt you.””

Her words stopped me.

Because she was right.

I had spent my life fighting enemies in boardrooms.

But this person wasn’t attacking my company.

They were attacking my home.

Claire took Noah upstairs.

I waited.

Then I heard a voice.

“Daniel.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I stepped into the hallway.

A man stood near the entrance.

Older.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he belonged there.

“Ethan Vale.””

He smiled slightly.

“I was wondering when you would figure it out.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You broke into my house.””

“No.””

He looked around.

“I came to talk.””

“At midnight?””

“Desperate people don’t usually schedule appointments.””

I took a step forward.

“You threatened my son.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something close to regret.

“I never wanted Noah involved.””

“You sent someone to watch him.””

“I sent someone to protect him.””

I laughed once.

“No one protects a child by terrifying his father.””

Ethan looked at me.

“You really don’t know.””

“Know what?””

He reached into his coat.

My body immediately tensed.

But he only pulled out a folder.

He placed it on the table.

“Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was.””

I stared at the folder.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“What does he have to do with this?””

Ethan looked toward the stairs.

Toward where Noah was hiding.

“Everything.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were old photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

And one name repeated over and over.

Cross Foundation.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Ethan’s face became serious.

“Your father built something before he died.””

“Another company?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“A secret account.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does when you know what was inside.””

I flipped through the papers.

Then stopped.

There was a photograph of my father standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who shouldn’t have been there.

My mother.

But my mother had died fifteen years before that picture was taken.

I looked at Ethan.

“What am I looking at?””

He said nothing.

“Ethan.””

His voice dropped.

“Your father wasn’t hiding money, Daniel.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“He was hiding the truth about your family.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Unknown number.

A new message.

I opened it.

And felt the world tilt.

It was a picture taken inside my house.

A picture of Claire.

Standing next to someone.

Someone who had been dead for fifteen years.

The message underneath said:

*Ask your wife who Noah’s real enemy is.*

I looked at Claire’s name on the screen.

Then at Ethan.

And for the first time, I wondered if the person I had spent years protecting my family from…

May you like

wasn’t outside our home.

Maybe they had been inside it all along. :::
