Chapter 4: The Name I Never Expected
The message stayed on my phone screen for thirty-seven seconds.
I know because I counted.
Thirty-seven seconds of staring at a picture of my son taken by someone who had been close enough to my home to watch him.
Thirty-seven seconds of hearing every possible explanation race through my mind.
A prank.
A threat.
A lie.
But one thought kept returning.
Someone knew something about Noah.
Something I didn’t.
“Daniel.””
Marcus’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
The entire conference room was watching me.
“Find out where that picture came from.””
Marcus nodded immediately.
“Already working on it.””
Alan leaned forward.
“What did the message say?””
I locked my phone.
“Nothing that concerns you.””
The room became uncomfortable.
Everyone knew when I was hiding information.
But this wasn’t business.
This was my son.
I walked out before anyone could ask another question.
My first call was to the one person I never thought I would question.
My wife.
Claire.
She answered on the third ring.
“Hey, are you okay?””
Her voice sounded normal.
Too normal.
I closed my office door.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“At home.””
“Is Noah with you?””
“Yes.””
I looked through the glass window of my office toward the city below.
“Claire, I need you to answer something honestly.””
Another pause.
“What is it?””
I swallowed.
“Is there something about Noah’s birth you never told me?””
Silence.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Silence.
That was the moment I knew.
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Claire.””
She breathed in slowly.
“Daniel…”
The way she said my name scared me.
“What happened?””
I almost laughed.
What happened?
My son had been slapped.
Someone was threatening us.
My company was being attacked.
And now my wife was hesitating.
“Someone sent me a message.””
“What kind of message?””
“A message telling me to ask you about Noah.””
Her breathing changed.
“Who sent it?””
“That’s not important.””
“It is.””
“No, Claire.””
My voice became colder.
“What’s important is why someone thinks you’re hiding something from me.””
She didn’t answer.
I heard movement.
Then her voice lowered.
“Daniel, come home.””
“Why?””
“Because this isn’t something we should talk about over the phone.””
That sentence hurt more than I expected.
After everything we had survived together, there were still things she couldn’t say to me.
“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.””
When I arrived home, Claire was standing in the kitchen.
Noah was upstairs.
She looked exhausted.
Not scared.
Exhausted.
Like she had been carrying something heavy alone for years.
“Tell me.””
She looked away.
“I wanted to.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
“When were you planning to tell me?””
“Never.””
The honesty shocked me.
I stepped back.
“Never?””
Claire wiped her eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That you would look at him differently.””
My chest tightened.
“Look at who differently?””
She looked toward the ceiling.
Toward Noah’s room.
“Daniel…”
Her voice cracked.
“There was a chance Noah wasn’t yours.””
The room went completely still.
I heard the refrigerator humming.
A car passing outside.
Everything except my own heartbeat.
“What did you say?””
Claire started crying.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
“I don’t know.””
“After another ten years?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then when?””
She covered her face.
“I was nineteen when I found out I was pregnant.””
I stared at her.
We had been together since college.
But Noah had always been the center of our lives.
I had never questioned anything.
Not once.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
“Before you and I met, I was with someone else.””
I said nothing.
Because I already knew where this was going.
“And?””
She whispered:
“And he disappeared.””
My jaw tightened.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation was worse than any answer.
“His name was Ethan Vale.””
The name hit me like a physical blow.
Because I knew that name.
Everyone in my industry knew it.
Ethan Vale was the founder of Vale Technologies.
My biggest competitor.
The man whose company had been fighting mine for years.
The man who had tried to buy Cross Holdings twice.
The man whose fingerprints were now somehow connected to my company’s stolen documents.
“No.””
Claire looked down.
“I never wanted you involved.””
I stepped closer.
“Was Noah his son?””
She closed her eyes.
“I don’t know.””
The answer felt impossible.
“You don’t know?””
“I found out after Noah was born that Ethan had access to my medical records.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
She looked at me.
“But I do know one thing.””
“What?””
“He came back six months ago.””
My blood went cold.
“Six months ago?””
Claire nodded.
“He found me.””
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“What did he want?””
She looked toward Noah’s room again.
And whispered:
“He wanted his son back.””
Before I could answer, the sound of glass breaking came from upstairs.
We both froze.
Noah.
I ran.
And when I opened his bedroom door, my heart stopped.
The window was open.
The curtains were moving in the wind.
May you like
And on Noah’s pillow was a small envelope.
With my name written on it.
