The Night They Hit My Son / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Name

I used to believe power was measured by money.

I was wrong.

Power was measured by what you were willing to lose.

And that night, standing on the Whitmore family’s porch with my son crying against my shoulder, I realized there was nothing more dangerous than a father who had already lost everything once.

Marcus approached carefully.

“Mr. Cross.””

I looked at him.

“Not now.””

He nodded.

Because he understood.

Everyone who worked for me knew one thing.

Business came second.

Family came first.

Noah had his face buried in my jacket.

I could feel him shaking.

“Dad,” he whispered.

“I’m here.””

“Did I do something wrong?””

That question hurt more than the slap.

I looked at him.

“No, buddy.””

“But she was mad.””

I touched his cheek gently.

“She was wrong.””

Behind us, Emily Whitmore stood frozen.

Her husband, Richard, looked like he wanted to disappear.

“Mr. Cross,” Richard said quietly, “I can explain.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

That scared people more than anger.

“You can’t explain what happened.””

Richard swallowed.

“Emily made a mistake.””

I looked at him.

“A mistake is forgetting someone’s birthday.””

I glanced at Noah.

“A mistake is burning dinner.””

Then I looked back at him.

“Putting your hand on a child is a choice.””

Emily stepped forward.

“I didn’t know who he was.””

The street became silent again.

I stared at her.

“That is your defense?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“I thought he was just some kid.””

My jaw tightened.

“That sentence tells me everything I need to know.””

She opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

Because there was nothing she could say that would make it better.

Marcus handed me a tissue.

I wiped Noah’s face.

Then I noticed something.

His firefighter helmet was cracked.

When he fell, it had hit the ground.

A small crack ran across the plastic.

Noah noticed me looking.

“It’s okay, Dad.””

I looked at him.

“No, it’s not.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I forgot the words.””

I knelt down.

“Listen to me.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t have to earn kindness.””

His eyes filled with tears again.

“You don’t have to say the perfect thing.””

I hugged him.

“You are already enough.””

Behind me, I heard Richard speaking quietly.

“Daniel, please.””

I stood.

“Tomorrow morning, your attorneys will receive notice.””

Richard’s face changed.

“About the acquisition?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

That confused him.

“Then what?””

“About the investigation.””

Emily’s expression hardened.

“Investigation?””

I nodded.

“Your home security cameras recorded everything.””

Richard looked toward the house.

The color drained from his face.

Emily whispered, “You can’t be serious.””

“I am.””

The man who had recorded the video stepped forward.

“I already sent a copy.””

Emily looked at him.

“Tom?””

The man avoided her eyes.

“I couldn’t pretend I didn’t see it.””

Her anger shifted.

“You betrayed me?””

Tom shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Noah.

“I just didn’t want to be the kind of person who watched that happen and did nothing.””

For the first time, Emily looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Noah fell asleep in my arms before they finished asking questions.

I carried him to the SUV.

Marcus opened the door.

As I placed Noah inside, I heard my phone ring.

It was my attorney.

I answered.

“Daniel.””

His voice was tense.

“What happened?””

I looked back at the Whitmore house.

“Someone hurt my son.””

There was a pause.

Then he said something I didn’t expect.

“Daniel, before you do anything, you need to know something.””

“What?””

“The Whitmores weren’t supposed to be your problem tonight.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“They were supposed to be removed from the deal this morning.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then my attorney lowered his voice.

“Because someone inside your company changed the documents.””

I stared at the house.

The same house where my son had been slapped.

The same family whose company was tied to the biggest decision of my career.

“Who changed them?””

My attorney hesitated.

Then he answered.

“The signature belongs to someone who has access to your private office.””

I looked at Noah sleeping peacefully in the back seat.

Someone had hurt my son.

But now I realized something worse.

May you like

Someone had been trying to destroy my family long before Halloween night.

And they were much closer than I thought.
