The Night They Hit My Son / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: The Enemy Inside the Family

We returned home after midnight.

Nobody spoke during the drive.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because there was too much.

My entire identity had been rewritten in one night.

The father I worshipped wasn’t my biological father.

The mother I buried was alive.

The company I built was connected to a secret war.

And my son was somehow at the center of it.

When we arrived, Noah was asleep on the couch.

A blanket covered him.

His firefighter helmet sat beside him.

I stood there for a long time.

Because no matter what secrets existed around him…

He was still my son.

My boy.

Claire came beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t look at her.

“I know.””

She swallowed.

“Are you angry?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt her.

“But I’m not angry because you lied.””

She looked confused.

“Then why?””

I looked at Noah.

“I’m angry because you carried all of this alone.””

Her eyes filled.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You were protecting me from the truth.””

“Yes.””

“And now the truth found us anyway.””

She nodded.

I wanted to be furious.

Maybe part of me was.

But another part remembered every night she stayed awake when Noah was sick.

Every sacrifice.

Every time she chose our family.

Secrets could hurt.

But love could be complicated too.

Marcus entered the room.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

“What?””

“We found something from the security footage.””

He handed me a tablet.

A video played.

The front door.

The night someone entered.

The camera showed a figure walking inside.

I watched carefully.

The person wore dark clothing.

Their face was hidden.

But then they turned slightly.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized the way they walked.

The posture.

The confidence.

The familiarity.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“You know them?””

I couldn’t answer.

The person in the video walked directly toward my office.

Like they knew exactly where to go.

Like they had done it before.

Then the video froze.

A single frame.

The face partially visible.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been at my company for years.

Someone who had stood beside me during every major decision.

Alan Pierce.

My CFO.

I stared.

“Impossible.””

Marcus was quiet.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Alan wouldn’t do this.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Are you sure?””

I looked at her.

She wasn’t accusing him.

She was asking.

And that was worse.

Because after everything…

I wasn’t sure of anything anymore.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Alan.

*We need to talk. Alone.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*I know who really betrayed your father.*

A third message came immediately.

*And if you want Noah to live, you’ll come without your security team.*

I looked at Marcus.

He already knew what I was thinking.

“Absolutely not.””

I ignored him.

Because Alan knew something.

Something about my father.

Something about the Black Circle.

Something about Noah.

I typed one response.

*Where?*

The answer came instantly.

An old warehouse address.

Then one final message.

*Come alone, Daniel. The person you think is protecting you is the person you should fear most.*

I looked around the room.

At Claire.

At Marcus.

At the people closest to me.

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

I didn’t know who was on my side.
