The Night They Hit My Son / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10: The Father I Never Knew

I read the sentence three times.

*Only give this to Daniel when he learns the truth about who raised him.*

The handwriting was my father’s.

I knew every curve.

Every sharp line.

Every impatient mark he made when he wrote too quickly.

But the meaning behind those words felt impossible.

Who raised me?

The answer should have been obvious.

My parents.

My father.

My mother.

The people whose photographs had filled our house.

The people I remembered.

Except one of them was dead before I was old enough to understand what death meant.

And the other one had secrets buried deeper than I ever imagined.

“Daniel.””

Claire’s voice came from behind me.

I turned.

She was staring at the key.

Her face had lost all color.

“You know what this is.””

It wasn’t a question.

She looked away.

“I know what it means.””

The anger came before I could stop it.

“How much more?””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel.””

“How much more have you kept from me?””

Noah stood nearby, watching us.

I immediately lowered my voice.

Not because I was less angry.

Because he didn’t deserve to carry it.

“Marcus,” I said quietly.

He understood.

He took Noah outside to the backyard with one of the security officers.

The moment they were gone, I faced Claire.

“Start talking.””

She sat down.

“My father died when I was young.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“Because he wasn’t your biological father.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Even after everything.

Even after the impossible pictures and secret documents.

That still hurt.

I stared at her.

“Say that again.””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Your father raised you. He loved you. But biologically…”

She stopped.

“Daniel, he wasn’t your father.””

The room became silent.

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind couldn’t accept it.

“No.””

Claire didn’t move.

“No?””

“My father was my father.””

“Yes.””

She nodded quickly.

“He was.””

“Then why are you saying this?””

“Because your father wanted you to know.””

I looked at the key.

The note.

The impossible truth.

“Who was my biological father?””

Claire looked toward Ethan.

I hadn’t noticed he was still standing near the doorway.

His face was unreadable.

That scared me.

“Ethan?””

He stepped forward.

“I think I know.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“But I suspected.””

I walked toward him.

“You knew something about my family before tonight.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I was trying to confirm it.””

My anger rose.

“You don’t get to investigate my life like a business deal.””

Ethan accepted the accusation.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

Then he said:

“But if I had told you before I knew the truth, you would have destroyed the wrong person.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Claire.

“It means the person who changed your company documents isn’t protecting the Black Circle.””

A pause.

“They’re trying to stop you from finding out who started it.””

I looked at the key.

“Where does this go?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus returned.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

He was holding a tablet.

“We found something.””

“What?””

“Your father owned a property under a different name.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Where?””

“An old house outside the city.””

Claire stood immediately.

“That’s where he kept the records.””

I looked at her.

“You’ve been there?””

She hesitated.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“After he died.””

I felt something inside me break.

“You went there without telling me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice became quiet.

“But nobody ever asks what I wanted.””

No one answered.

An hour later, we arrived at the old property.

It was nothing like the mansion I grew up in.

No guards.

No luxury.

Just a small abandoned house surrounded by trees.

My father had hidden his biggest secret here.

Not in a bank.

Not in a company vault.

Here.

Marcus opened the door.

Dust covered everything.

A table.

A chair.

Old photographs.

Then I saw it.

A small wooden box.

Sitting in the center of the room.

The same Black Circle symbol carved into the top.

I walked toward it.

The key in my hand felt heavier with every step.

I inserted it.

The lock opened.

Inside was one item.

A letter.

My name written across the front.

I opened it.

The first line made my entire body freeze.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, then you finally know that the man who raised you was not your father.*

I kept reading.

*But he was the only man who ever deserved that title.*

My eyes blurred.

Then I saw the final paragraph.

*The person who betrayed me is someone you have loved your entire life.*

I stopped.

Below it was a name.

May you like

A name I never expected.

A name that changed everything.
