Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden in the Papers
I didn’t touch the envelope.
Not immediately.
I had spent my entire adult life making decisions quickly.
Millions of dollars.
Thousands of employees.
Entire companies depending on my judgment.
But that small envelope sitting on my son’s bed made me afraid to move.
Because whoever left it there had been close enough to touch Noah’s pillow.
Close enough to enter his room.
Close enough to know exactly where my son slept.
Marcus arrived within minutes.
The moment he saw the open window, his expression changed.
“This wasn’t forced.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He examined the lock.
“Someone knew how to open it.””
Claire stood behind me, shaking.
“Daniel…”
I turned.
“Take Noah downstairs.””
She nodded.
But before she left, Noah appeared in the hallway.
His hair was messy.
His firefighter pajamas were wrinkled.
“Dad?””
I immediately softened.
“Hey, buddy.””
“Why is everyone here?””
I forced a smile.
“Just checking something.””
He looked toward his bedroom.
“Did someone come in?””
Children noticed more than adults realized.
I walked toward him.
“No one is going to hurt you.””
He studied my face.
Then he nodded.
“Okay.””
Claire took his hand and led him away.
Marcus waited until they disappeared.
“Open it.””
I looked at the envelope.
The outside had only my name.
No address.
No signature.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a single document.
A DNA test.
My eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
The result was clear.
Probability of biological relationship:
99.99%.
I stared at it.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Noah was my son.
My knees almost gave out.
Not because I doubted him.
Never.
Because someone had tried to make me doubt the one thing I knew with absolute certainty.
Marcus watched my face.
“What is it?””
I handed him the paper.
He read it.
Then looked confused.
“This says Noah is yours.””
I nodded.
“But why send this?””
That was when I noticed the second page.
A handwritten note.
I unfolded it.
*You were never supposed to know he was yours.*
My stomach dropped.
Below it was another sentence.
*Ask Claire what happened the night Noah was born.*
I looked at Marcus.
“Find Ethan Vale.””
Marcus immediately picked up his phone.
“I’ll handle it.””
“No.””
He stopped.
“I want everything.””
“Daniel—”
“Everything.””
I looked at the DNA test.
“They’re playing with my family.””
An hour later, I sat across from Claire at the kitchen table.
Noah was watching cartoons upstairs.
The normal sound of a child laughing made the conversation feel even darker.
“Tell me about the night Noah was born.””
Claire looked like she had been waiting for this moment.
“I was alone.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You were traveling for a business deal.””
I remembered.
Three days away.
The biggest contract of my career.
“I called you.””
“Yes.””
“But you told me everything was fine.””
She nodded.
“Because I didn’t want you to leave your meeting.””
I stared at her.
“Claire, you almost died giving birth.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Ethan came to the hospital.””
The name felt poisonous.
“What did he do?””
“He said Noah was his.””
I leaned back.
“And you believed him?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
She looked down.
“Because he showed me documents.””
“What documents?””
“Medical records.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
“I know that now.””
She wiped her tears.
“But back then, I was scared. Ethan told me he had connections. He said if I tried to stop him, he would take Noah away.””
My hands tightened.
“And you said nothing.””
“I was protecting our son.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“Our son.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
The words should have comforted me.
But they didn’t.
Because one question remained.
“Why did he come back six months ago?””
Claire went silent.
Then she whispered:
“Because he knew something about you.””
“What?””
“He said your father left behind something before he died.””
I froze.
My father had been gone for eight years.
Nobody talked about him.
Not even Claire.
“What something?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
A notification appeared on my phone.
Marcus.
I opened the message.
A photo.
Ethan Vale standing outside my company building.
Underneath it:
*He wasn’t investigating you. He was looking for something your father hid.*
Then another message came through.
*Daniel, you need to leave your house now.*
I looked up.
“Why?””
May you like
Marcus replied instantly.
*Because someone just entered through the front door.*
