Chapter 9: The Company He Stole

The file contained one sentence.

*Transfer of ownership completed.*

Below it was a date.

The day after my father died.

I stared at the screen.

My hands went cold.

My father’s company.

The company he built from nothing.

The company he spent thirty years protecting.

The company I thought was still part of our family.

Adrian had taken it.

Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.

One look at my face told him something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I handed him my phone.

He read the file.

His expression changed.

“No.””

Julian looked over his shoulder.

“What?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He kept scrolling.

Then he whispered:

“He didn’t just steal the foundation.””

“What?””

“He stole Vale Industries.””

The name sounded impossible.

Because it was my father’s name.

My family’s legacy.

“How?””

Caleb took the phone.

“Through a hidden merger.””

I looked at him.

“Explain.””

He sat down.

“After your father died, Adrian convinced everyone you were too overwhelmed to handle business decisions.””

My stomach tightened.

“He told people I couldn’t manage it.””

Marcus nodded.

“He used your grief against you.””

I remembered that year.

The funeral.

The paperwork.

The endless meetings.

Adrian taking my hand and telling me:

“Let me handle this.””

I thought he was helping.

He was stealing.

“He forged my signature.””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“I want everything.””

My brothers looked at me.

“What?””

“All documents.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Are you sure?””

I looked at the papers.

At the photograph of Lily.

At everything Adrian took.

“Yes.””

I had spent eight years trying to save a marriage that was already built on lies.

I wasn’t saving anything anymore.

I was taking my life back.

The next morning, the foundation board meeting began at nine.

Adrian arrived wearing a perfect suit.

The same confident smile.

The same performance.

Except this time, the audience knew better.

I walked into the conference room with my brothers beside me.

Every person turned.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Elena.””

I ignored him.

The board chairman stood.

“Mrs. Vale, we weren’t expecting you.””

“I know.””

I placed a folder on the table.

“That’s why I’m here.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“This is inappropriate.””

The chairman looked at him.

“Mr. Vale, sit down.””

For the first time, Adrian obeyed someone else.

The room filled with documents.

Bank transfers.

Fake contracts.

Recorded conversations.

Everything.

Then the chairman looked at Adrian.

“Did you misuse foundation funds?””

Adrian’s lawyer immediately spoke.

“There is no proof.””

Marcus smiled.

“There will be.””

He pressed play.

The recording from the gala filled the room.

Adrian’s own voice.

Planning.

Manipulating.

Threatening.

Nobody spoke afterward.

Then the chairman looked at me.

“Elena, there is one more matter.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He opened another file.

“This arrived this morning.””

He handed it to me.

I read the first page.

And my blood froze.

Because it wasn’t about money.

It wasn’t about the company.

It was about Lily.

A custody petition.

Filed by Adrian.

I looked up.

“He’s trying to take her?””

The chairman looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from Adrian.

I opened it.

*You wanted a war. Now you have one.*

Another message followed.

*Let’s see if the court believes a woman who couldn’t even keep her own family together.*

I stared at the screen.

Then I slowly locked my phone.

Because Adrian still believed he knew me.

He still believed shame was enough to control me.

He didn’t understand something important.

The woman who walked into that courtroom would not be the woman he married.

May you like

She would be the woman he created.

And she was done losing.
