Chapter 7: The Little Girl Who Knew My Name

The message stayed on my screen for almost a full minute.

*Lily knows about you.*

Four words.

Four words that changed the way I breathed.

I had imagined meeting my child a thousand different ways.

In those dreams, I was older.

Ready.

Prepared.

I imagined holding a baby in my arms.

I imagined hearing her first laugh.

I imagined watching her take her first steps.

I never imagined meeting my seven-year-old daughter after discovering my husband had stolen seven years from us.

Marcus noticed my hands shaking.

“Elena?””

I looked up.

“She knows about me.””

My brothers exchanged a glance.

Claire was still on the phone.

“Claire,” I said softly.

“What did you tell her?””

The silence that followed was painful.

“Everything I could.””

I closed my eyes.

“Everything?””

“Not everything,” Claire said quickly.

“She knows she has another mother.””

My chest tightened.

“She knows my name?””

“Yes.””

A tear slipped down my cheek before I could stop it.

Seven years.

My daughter had known my name for seven years.

But she had never known my voice.

“She asks about you,” Claire whispered.

I covered my mouth.

“What?””

“She asks why her father gets angry when she mentions you.””

My blood ran cold.

“What did Adrian tell her?””

Claire hesitated.

“That you were sick.””

The room went silent.

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because the cruelty was unbelievable.

“He told his own daughter I was sick?””

“He said you couldn’t handle being a mother.””

My brothers looked furious.

But I barely noticed.

Because all I could see was a little girl growing up believing a lie about me.

A little girl who thought her mother abandoned her.

“Where is she?”” I asked.

Claire went quiet.

“Elena…”

“Please.””

Another pause.

Then she said:

“She’s at my apartment.””

Marcus immediately stood.

“We’re going.””

But I stopped him.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I wiped my face.

“I need to go alone.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Absolutely not.””

“I need to meet my daughter.””

His expression softened.

“I know.””

“And I need my first memory with her to be about me.””

The room became quiet.

Finally, Marcus nodded.

“We’ll be nearby.””

I smiled sadly.

“You always do that.””

“Do what?””

“Protect me.””

He looked at me.

“Because you’re our little sister.””

For the first time in years, hearing that didn’t feel like a burden.

It felt like home.

Claire lived in a quiet neighborhood far from the city.

Nothing about the apartment looked like the place where a secret had been hidden.

There were flowers on the balcony.

Children’s drawings on the refrigerator.

A small pink backpack near the door.

Normal things.

The kind of things Adrian had stolen from me.

Claire opened the door.

She looked different from the photograph.

Older.

Tired.

Guilty.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I studied her face.

For years, I imagined hating her.

The other woman.

The person who destroyed my marriage.

But standing there, I didn’t see an enemy.

I saw another person manipulated by the same man.

“Were you in love with him?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

Claire looked down.

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

“Me too.””

That answer seemed to hurt both of us.

Then a small voice came from the hallway.

“Mom?””

I froze.

The little girl standing there held a stuffed rabbit against her chest.

She had brown hair.

Green eyes.

And a small scar above her eyebrow.

I knew that scar.

Because Adrian had once told me about it.

He had casually mentioned his friend’s daughter falling from a swing.

A lie hidden inside an ordinary conversation.

Lily looked at me.

Not afraid.

Just curious.

“Who is she?””

Claire looked at me.

Then at her daughter.

“This is Elena.””

The little girl tilted her head.

“My Elena?””

My heart stopped.

I couldn’t speak.

Lily stepped closer.

“Dad said you didn’t want me.””

The words hurt more than any slap.

Because they came from a child who didn’t understand she was carrying someone else’s cruelty.

I lowered myself to her height.

“Lily.””

She stared at me.

“I need you to know something.””

She hugged her rabbit tighter.

“What?””

“I wanted you.””

Her eyes changed.

“I did?””

I nodded.

“More than anything.””

She looked back at Claire.

Then at me.

“Why didn’t you come?””

The question broke me.

Because there was no answer that could fix seven years.

“I didn’t know you were here.””

Her eyebrows pulled together.

“Dad said you left.””

I swallowed.

“Your dad wasn’t telling the truth.””

She was quiet.

Children know when adults are pretending.

After a moment, she whispered:

“Are you really my mom?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

The room disappeared.

No Adrian.

No gala.

No betrayal.

Just me and my daughter.

Then Lily did something I would remember forever.

She reached out.

And held my hand.

But before I could say anything else, my phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered immediately.

His voice was tense.

“Elena, you need to leave.””

My heart dropped.

“Why?””

“Because Adrian knows where you are.””

I looked toward the window.

Claire’s face changed.

“How?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Because someone from inside the foundation gave him your location.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Someone had betrayed us.

May you like

Again.

And this time, I knew exactly who I needed to find.
