Chapter 2: The Family He Never Knew

Adrian always believed he knew everything about me.

He knew my favorite coffee order.

He knew the necklace my mother left me.

He knew how to make me apologize.

But he never knew the three people who would destroy his perfect little world with a single phone call.

My brothers stood between us.

Marcus was the first person I had ever trusted.

He was seven years older than me and had always been the one who walked me home from school, fixed my broken bicycle, and sat outside my bedroom door when I cried.

Julian was the fighter.

He hated injustice more than he hated losing.

Caleb was the quiet one.

Which made him the most dangerous.

Because Caleb never threatened anyone.

He simply acted.

Adrian looked at them like they were strangers interrupting a business meeting.

“Who are you?””

Marcus didn’t blink.

“You heard me.””

Adrian laughed once.

A nervous laugh.

“You have no idea who you’re talking to.””

Julian stepped forward.

“And you have no idea who you’re talking to.””

Several guests backed away.

Phones remained raised.

The entire ballroom had become a courtroom.

Except the evidence was standing on Adrian’s own face.

The man who claimed to protect women had just been exposed.

Vanessa quickly moved closer to Adrian.

“Adrian, this is ridiculous. These people are causing a scene.””

Caleb looked at her.

“You mean the scene where your boyfriend assaulted his wife?””

Her face went pale.

“We are not—”

“Don’t lie,” Julian interrupted.

His voice cut through the room.

“We heard enough.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You were spying on me?””

Marcus looked almost offended.

“No.””

He glanced at me.

“We were protecting her.””

My chest tightened.

I hadn’t heard those words in years.

Because after I married Adrian, I had slowly removed my family from my life.

Not because they hurt me.

Because Adrian convinced me they did.

“They don’t understand us,” he used to say.

“They’re trying to control you.””

“They don’t want you to grow.””

And I believed him.

I believed him until I barely recognized myself.

Adrian grabbed his jacket from a nearby chair.

“This is a misunderstanding.””

Marcus looked at him.

“A misunderstanding?””

He pointed toward my face.

“That’s what you call hitting someone?””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“She provoked me.””

A wave of disgust moved through the room.

Vanessa immediately stepped in.

“She was being emotional.””

I turned toward her.

“You’re defending him?””

She shrugged.

“I’m saying there are two sides.””

I stared at her.

“Two sides?””

My voice was quiet.

“Your side is the woman wearing my donated foundation’s bracelet while standing beside my husband.””

The whispers grew louder.

Vanessa’s confidence cracked.

Adrian looked at me sharply.

“Enough.””

“No,” I said.

For the first time in eight years, I didn’t lower my voice.

“No, Adrian. You don’t get to silence me anymore.””

His eyes changed.

He wasn’t angry because I insulted him.

He was angry because I stopped being afraid.

Marcus noticed.

So did my brothers.

And so did everyone else.

A reporter near the stage stepped closer.

“Mrs. Vale, are you saying Mr. Vale assaulted you?””

Adrian immediately turned toward the cameras.

“This is a private matter.””

Marcus smiled without humor.

“No, it stopped being private when you did it in front of two hundred witnesses.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You think you can threaten me?””

Marcus reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

“No.””

He pressed the screen.

“I think you’re going to threaten yourself.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“What is that?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Do you want him to know?””

I hesitated.

Because that was the moment everything changed.

The moment I could no longer pretend my marriage could be repaired.

The moment I had to choose between protecting Adrian’s reputation and protecting myself.

I nodded.

Marcus turned the phone around.

A recording played.

Adrian’s own voice filled the ballroom.

It was from three weeks earlier.

His voice.

His words.

His plan.

“If Elena refuses to sign the new agreement, we’ll make her look unstable. People believe emotional women. They always have.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Adrian looked at the phone.

Then at me.

“You recorded me?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Julian and Caleb.

“We did something better.””

Adrian’s face turned cold.

“What?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“We found out what else you’ve been hiding.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because I knew about Vanessa.

I knew about the affair.

But my brothers had spent the last month investigating something else.

Something they refused to tell me.

Something they said would change everything.

Adrian stared at Marcus.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Elena, there’s something you need to see.””

Caleb pulled an envelope from his coat.

My name was written across the front.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

It belonged to someone who had been dead for six years.

May you like

My father.

And inside that envelope was a truth Adrian had spent years making sure I never discovered.
