Chapter 3: The Secret Inside the Envelope

I didn’t open the envelope immediately.

That was the strangest part.

After everything Adrian had done, after the humiliation, the betrayal, the slap that everyone in the room would remember forever, the thing that scared me most was a piece of paper with my father’s handwriting.

Some wounds don’t come from enemies.

Some come from the people you trusted.

Marcus guided me away from the crowd toward a quiet corner near the balcony.

The city lights shimmered below us.

Behind the glass doors, the ballroom continued buzzing.

Everyone was talking.

Everyone was recording.

Everyone knew something had changed.

Adrian followed us.

Of course he did.

Control was the only thing he understood.

“Elena,” he said.

I turned.

His face was different now.

The confidence was gone.

But I knew him.

I knew how quickly fear became anger.

“Don’t do this,” he whispered.

I stared at him.

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything.””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“You destroyed it.””

He shook his head.

“No. Vanessa was a mistake.””

I looked at him.

“A mistake?””

He swallowed.

“I was angry.””

“Because I spoke during my own speech?””

“Because you always challenge me.””

The answer came so easily.

Like he truly believed that was an excuse.

Marcus stepped between us.

“You need to leave.””

Adrian ignored him.

“Elena, listen to me.””

I laughed softly.

That sound surprised even me.

Because I wasn’t crying anymore.

“I spent eight years listening to you.””

His eyes softened.

For a second, I saw the man I married.

The man who brought me soup when I was sick.

The man who held my hand at my mother’s funeral.

Then I remembered the man standing in front of me now.

“Please,” he said.

A single word.

A word I had waited years to hear.

But it was too late.

Caleb opened the envelope.

Inside were several documents.

The first page had my father’s signature.

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Tell her.””

Adrian said nothing.

My stomach tightened.

“Tell me what?””

Julian looked furious.

“You knew.””

Adrian’s eyes moved toward him.

“Knew what?””

Julian stepped forward.

“You knew Elena’s father left her a controlling share of Vale Foundation before he died.””

I froze.

“What?””

The room seemed to tilt.

I looked at Adrian.

He didn’t deny it.

That was the answer.

“You knew?””

His silence was louder than words.

My fingers tightened around the papers.

“My father left me part of the foundation?””

Marcus nodded.

“Not just part.””

He looked at Adrian.

“The majority voting rights.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” Caleb said quietly.

“It was hidden.””

The air left my lungs.

I looked at Adrian.

“How?””

He finally spoke.

His voice was low.

“Your father changed his will.””

“And you knew?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of the money.

Not because of the foundation.

Because all these years, Adrian had watched me struggle.

He had watched me believe I was dependent on him.

He had watched me think I had nothing.

“You let me believe I needed you,” I whispered.

Adrian stepped closer.

“I was protecting you.””

Marcus laughed.

A sharp, angry sound.

“Protecting her?””

He pointed toward the ballroom.

“You isolated her from her family.””

“You controlled her finances.””

“You took credit for her charity work.””

“You convinced her she was powerless.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“You don’t know our marriage.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“I do.””

For once, he had no response.

Then Vanessa appeared behind him.

Her face was pale.

“Adrian.””

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“There’s something else.””

Adrian looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Say it.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I didn’t know about the documents.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked down.

“I thought you were going to divorce her.””

Silence.

A cold feeling moved through me.

Adrian stared at Vanessa.

“Why would you think that?””

Because she knew something.

Something even Adrian hadn’t expected her to reveal.

Vanessa slowly reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small black folder.

“I found this in your office.””

Adrian’s face went white.

“What did you take?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I think Elena deserves to know.””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Adrian standing beside a woman I had never seen before.

A woman holding a baby.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

A date from seven years ago.

The year after Adrian and I got married.

May you like

Vanessa whispered the words that made the entire room disappear.

“Elena… I think your husband has another family.””
